Erin is nearly four years old, and I cannot believe that she will be starting school this September *sob*.

In preparation for this, we have been trying to work with Erin to help her understanding of letters and numbers, and teach her how to spell and write her name.

She has always had a great attention span when it comes to educational games, so I was looking forward to playing with the Alphabet Flashcards, a fun and interactive game from Orchard Toys.

About the Product

The Orchard Toys Alphabet Flashcards include 26 double sided cards and one reference board.

The cards feature a colourful, friendly illustration of the word on one side and the letter of the alphabet on the other. There is one card for every letter of the alphabet. The flashcards include a wide range of simple and more complex words, from ‘Ant’ to ‘Umbrella’.

The Alphabet Flashcards are incredibly versatile and can be used in a variety of different ways to develop children’s literacy skills, from learning the letters of the alphabet to using the picture side to learn first words.

Our Experience

We had lots of fun playing with the Alphabet Flashcards together. There are lots of different ways to play – here are some of our favourites:

  • Making the letter sounds (phonetically) and then flicking the card over to reveal the word on the back of the card.
  • Spot letters using the reference chart, laying the cards out and asking Erin to find the letter ‘A’
  • Turning all the cards to word side and asking Erin to point at the letter on the board which the word begins with.
  • Spelling familiar words with Mummy and then copying them onto a piece of paper
  • Tracing over the letter shapes with her finger

The cards are of a very high quality – made from thick and good quality thick cardboard. The illustrations are fun and cute, and include friendly characters that Erin enjoyed looking at.

Overall the Alphabet Flashcards are a fun educational game that doesn’t feel like a chore for me or Erin!

They are great for taking out and about with you as something she can look at / play with / interact with at families house / in a restaurant etc.

We have been playing with the Flashcards for a number of weeks now and I have noted improvement in her recognising the link between the letter sound and the word.

I would recommend the Alphabet Flashcards for anyone looking to help their pre-schooler improve on their alphabet reading and writing knowledge.

A big thumbs up from us!
