Quick, Easy (and legal!) way to get magazines for free

Quick, Easy (and legal!) way to get magazines for free

Did you know you can save money and read magazines for free? Even current editions?

I love magazines. In particular, however, I love being able to read magazines for free. In the rare moments I get to have some ‘me’ time, I love nothing more than sitting in a big comfy chair and having some much needed escapism – catching up on the latest celebrity gossip, checking out the latest fashion trends, or reading about the latest toys and products to come on the market.

There used to be a time when my whole house would be cluttered with copies of magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Glamour, and then moving on to buy a magazine subscription to Hello Magazine and Mother & Baby, but in recent months I haven’t bought a single one. And not for the reasons you might think.

Is this a boycott against photo shopped images? Nah. I know it happens, and I am intelligent enough to appreciate that the images I see are a far jump from reality.  I will raise my daughter to know that the reality of beauty is far from what she will see on the cover of a magazine.

Is it a frustration with the number of advertisements? Nah. Although I have to admit the number of advertorial pages in some modern mags is appalling.

No, it is far simpler than that. I have found a way to read magazines for FREE via my local library on my phone or ipad. With the current cost of living crisis, cancelling subscriptions may be the obvious first step to cutting your households expenses, but you don’t need to miss out on the magazines you know and love.

Sure, I miss the novelty of turning the pages and the gorgeous smell of freshly printed paper, but I can still get my quota of escapism, on my ipad thanks to the Libby app which allows me to read magazines for free via my local library.

read magazines for free via library

How to get magazines for free

The concept is very simple. Your local library gives you an online code to access their online magazine network via the Libby for Libraries app. Once registered and linked to your library account, you can simple download CURRENT editions of your favourite magazines for free (with 350 to choose from!) and read them right there on your phone. You can even be alerted when a new addition comes out.

Here are just a small selection of magazines you can read for free available on the app:

  • Radio Time
  • Woman’s Weekly
  • Country Living
  • Minecraft World
  • Good Food
  • Good Housekeeping
  • Woman & Home
  • Gardener’s World
  • Closer
  • Heat
  • Grazia

I have saved an absolute fortune reading my magazines on Libbym, and can honestly say I may never buy an actual magazine ever again!

For those of you who still fail to see the value of libraries, now might just be the time to pay them a visit!

PS – I assume this is a UK wide initiative and not just a Solihull Council thing. Might be worth investigating with your local library before you pay a visit!! 🙂

Your Mum’s 50th Birthday Gift Ideas

Your Mum’s 50th Birthday Gift Ideas

This is a collaborative post about 50th Birthday Gift Ideas

Mums are brilliant – a fact that often goes without saying, but still bears repeating. Still, that doesn’t make them any easier to buy presents for, even when it comes to big birthdays like their 50th. Where should you start in buying gifts 50th birthday gift ideas for your mum?

Often, the best gift you can give a parent is your time and presence; in truth, your mum will be utterly overjoyed for an opportunity to spend some quality time with you, whatever the occasion or experience. Still, there are some particularly amazing experiences and gifts you can share with your mum, if you choose carefully enough!

Whatever gift experience or event you choose, it likely won’t be taking place on the exact date of your mum’s birth. Rather, you’re promising a shared experience in the future. Whatever you choose as a gift, presentation is key. When looking for 50th birthday gift ideas, try bundling the tickets or schedule for the gift you have in mind in your mum’s 50th birthday card, to make sure she knows you care!

With that said, here are some of the best experience-based gift ideas for a mum on her 50th, to give you some starting inspiration:

50th Birthday Experiences

Tickets to a Concert

Your first port of call for any birthday experience will likely be a gig or concert. If the two of you share a favourite artist, getting a couple of tickets to their next show in your area is something of a no-brainer; you get to share your passion in a live setting!

If you simply have similar tastes, you might be able to take her along to something new and surprising – making for an evening of fun and discovery. Whether you stump for a night at the opera or a night in the mosh-pit, it’s the doing-it-together that counts.

Joint Classes

If music doesn’t quite appeal as an ideal 50th birthday gift, you could instead opt to enrol yourself and your mum in for a series of classes. Cooking and life drawing are common and popular forms of class for family to take together, but there is a whole variety of night classes and group activities you could sign up for together.

If your mum has always wanted to try her hand at a physical craft, there are hobbyist classes relating to carpentry and sculpture you could attend. Alternatively, you could resolve to learn a whole new language together!

A Trip Away

Of course, for a gift that will really bowl your mum over, there is nothing better than a surprise holiday or 50th birthday day out. Whisking your mum away for a long weekend city break or rural retreat can enable you both to spend some real quality time together, while enjoying the best of a place your mum has always wanted to visit. You could surprise here with a countryside holiday let, or go all-in on a luxury urban break in a European city of her choice

Why you should renovate your home

Why you should renovate your home

This is a collaborative post

For many people, house renovations are a sort of hobby. For others, the thought of all that interior upheaval and DIY fills them with dread. Nevertheless, if you own your own home or flat, it’s likely you’ll do renovations at some point in your time there. You may have just moved in and want to make it suitable for your needs and put your stamp on the place. It could be you’ve lived in one place for a long time and some changes are long overdue.

Whichever stage you’re at, there are so many reasons to renovate your home if you have the funds to do so.

Satisfy wanderlust

You may have been in your place a while and you’re starting to get itchy feet. However, the housing market is still seeing house prices increase substantially year on year, so moving home may not be financially viable right now.

If you want a change but can’t afford to take that leap, renovating your current home is a fantastic way to make it feel brand new. You’ll see it all in a whole new light and feel that excitement for coming home.

Maximise space

It’s so easily to accumulate bits and pieces over the years that don’t necessarily fit with your use of the space. Often, floor space may be taken up with multiple storage units to accommodate it all. We’ve all been there, but there are easy solutions.

It sounds obvious, but you probably aren’t making use of all the vertical storage space available to you in your home. Installing modern fitted wardrobes maximises your storage and frees up space to walk around, instantly making your home feel bigger.

Swapping out floor-standing lights for wall-mounted options lifts your eye and creates the illusion of a bigger room.

Create a haven

Is your home allowing you to be the best version of yourself? Renovations can be crucial for making your space work harder to support the trials and tribulations of modern life. For example, for a growing family, you may find installing more bathrooms takes the pressure off your morning routine and makes everyone calmer, dispelling arguments before they begin.

Boost efficiency

Windows account for nearly a fifth of heat lost through a house’s structure. This means upgrading your windows and external doors can have a huge impact on your energy efficiency. With rising bills, any help you can get is worth it. This is especially true if you live in an older property.

As well as the important practical element, replacing your windows and front door is a very simple way to make your home look fresher.

What makes the Perfect Afternoon Tea??

What makes the Perfect Afternoon Tea??

*Advertorial Content. This post also contains affiliate links*

Us British love a good cup of tea don’t we? Whether it’s surviving a busy day at the office or working from home, popping your slippers on after a long day, a catch up and heart to heart with friends or simply just because, most problems it appears, can be quickly and easily resolved with an announcement of  “I’ll just pop the kettle on”. 80% of Britons drink tea, and as a nation we consume 165 million cups daily – that’s 60.2 billion a year!

As a parent of two children, I really enjoy heading off with friends for afternoon tea. A chance to catch up, have a full conversation without the interruption of little voices and really talk. Spend some quality time with the people you care about, and indulge a little. Savouring every mouthful and enjoying each others company.

Thanks to Piglets Pantry at Buyagift – you can even enjoy the classic afternoon tea experience in the comfort of your own home and this Afternoon Tea week – we have a Piglets Pantry Classic Afternoon Tea for four to giveaway to one lucky reader!

This Afternoon Tea Week, why not treat yourself to a Piglets Pantry afternoon tea for your friends or loved ones?

The Piglets Pantry traditional afternoon tea to enjoy at home for four, includes:
– Four cheese and chive quiches
– Four Scotch eggs
– Four mini sausage rolls
– Four mini sausage rolls with cheese and pickle
– Four plain scones with clotted cream and strawberry conserve
– A selection of eight cakes (either carrot cake with cream cheese icing, blueberry, banana and lemon curd icing, chocolate chip and caramel drizzle)
– Earl Grey tea bags

But what does a perfect afternoon tea look like for you? It appears that as a nation, our views on what an afternoon tea should look AND sound like vary quite considerably!

How do you say scone?

There are two ways to describe these afternoon tea essentials. The first way rhymes with Gone and the second, the way I pronounce it rhymes with tone. Whilst I like to think my pronunciation is just the posher way of saying it, the reality appears to be that the further North you travel in the UK, the more likely you are to hear GONE. How do you say it?

Jam or Cream first?

This is also an age old debate and seems to be one on which lots of people disagree. A traditional Cornish afternoon tea involves adding the jam before the cream, Devon cream tea on the other hand tends to be the opposite. I, as always like to be different and ditch the cream altogether. Instead I smother my scones (current or plain I’m not fussy as long as they’re fresh!) in lashings of raspberry or strawberry jam, and then cut off small pieces with a knife to make it last that bit longer and help me savour every single bite!

Sweet or Savory First?

Most afternoon teas will serve their sweet and savory options at the same time, with the lower plates on a traditional tiered plate holder being for your savory options – classically with at least one fish and one cheese option. But who’s to say you can’t skip straight to the macaroon or lemon tart? Not me, I’m all for tucking in whichever way you fancy!

What are your afternoon tea essentials?

The 8th – 14th August is Afternoon Tea Week 2022, so why not celebrate by booking yourself an afternoon tea treat for you and a loved one? There are a fab range of afternoon teas to choose from at Buyagift.co.uk including some truly amazing themed afternoon teas. If you can’t decide, or would rather someone else made the decision, the Piglets Pantry Afternoon Tea at home for 4 is a great option.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to grab a cuppa.  I’ll just pop the kettle on…

Moprhie 2 in 1 Wireless Charging Station REVIEW

Moprhie 2 in 1 Wireless Charging Station REVIEW

This post is in collaboration with Moprhie. I was gifted a Morphie Wireless Charging Station for the purpose of this review.

You can never have too many chargers right?

I don’t know about you, but in this house, we always seem to be fighting over Apple chargers. The kids both have tablets for homework and play and always seem to be stealing the chargers from the side of our beds, meaning when we need one, we can never seem to find one.

With multiple items to charge overnight including my iWatch and iPhone, it always feels like there are never enough chargers and never enough space in the socket by my bed unless I unplug my bedside lamp – so it always feels like hard work.

We have recently been looking into wireless charging stations that offer the ability to charge multiple items simultaneously.

Morphie 2-in-1 wireless charging stand

Moprhie is a 2-in-1 wireless charging stand that allows you to simultaneously charge your air pods, Apple iWatch and iPhone all on one central charging post.

What is the Morphie 2-in-1 Wireless Charging Stand?

The Morphie charging stand includes a built-in Apple Watch magnetic charger as well as a dedicated charging stand for your iPhone. In addition, the USB-A port means you can easily charge a third, wired device like your AirPods Pro or AirPods.

With a convenient charging stand, everything you need will be charged and ready to take on the next day. The wireless charging stand is engineered to safely deliver up to 7.5W of power to your iPhone for a fast and efficient charge.

The easy-to-use charging stand can charge your iPhone in portrait mode or in landscape mode, the latter of which is handy for watching love island in bed without having to hold your phone too!

A smooth, glass finish makes the Morphie look sophisticated and adds a touch of style to any tabletop.

Our thoughts on the Morphie 2 in 1 Wireless Charging Stand

The Morphie has been a huge hit and has made me life SO much easier!

When I go to bed I simply dock my iPhone and pop my watch on the base and the job is done. No scrabbling around in the dark trying to switch over plug sockets.

The Morphie looks clean tidy and stylish on my bedside table, with no huge amount of trailing wires or cables.

The fact the phone stands upright whilst charging is also really practical – allowing me to charge my phone on my bedside table whilst being held at the optimum viewing angle for watching Netflix or ItvHub on my phone before bed.

My only criticism? As handy as the light on the Morphie is for showing that the device is charging, I find it a little bright and as it ends up being at eye height when I lie on my side. You do also need to make sure the phone is pushed back enough to trigger the charging.

The Morphie 2 in 1 charging station retails at £99.95 and is available at Zagg.com
