In this house I have two unicorn obsessed daughters and it’s fair to say that despite being around for some time, the unicorn craze shows no sign of disappearing any time soon! National Unicorn Day is a great opportunity for unicorn fans young and old to celebrate all the things we love about this beautiful mythical creature! To help us get into the Unicorn party spirit at home we were recently sent a magical box from ZURU, bursting with the all new Fairy Unicorn Squad Mystery Capsules!
What are the ZURU 5 Surprise Fairy Unicorn Squad capsules?
The NEW Fairy Unicorn Squad Capsules continue on a similar theme – large capsules with multiple sections that are unwrapped and peeled to reveal a super cute unicorn bestie & many other surprises inside!Each ZURU Fairy Unicorn Squad capsule comes with one of 13 surprise unicorn characters, each of which comes with their own pair of matching swappable fairy wings and a super long tail to brush & style.As children unbox the other sections of the capsule, more accessories to match their unicorn’s personality are revealed which can be used to glam up and coordinate the unicorn’s outfit to complete their final look. Last but not least, mix the mythical sweet scented unicorn poop compounds together to reveal a surprise colour, before squishing and stretching your creation to your hearts content! Our Experience of the ZURU 5 Surprise Unicorn Capsules
The girls were SO excited to unwrap, peel and reveal their ZURU surprise fairy unicorn squad capsules – so much so that attempting to photograph them whilst doing so was no mean feat!
There are 13 different unicorns to collect and we were sent a selection of the capsules and were lucky enough to reveal a variety of the unicorns without too many duplicates. 
As with the previous Zuru 5 Surprise capsules, the first step of revealing the contents is to peel off the outer plastic layer using the little zip, and opening up the capsule by peeling away the clasp that holds the sides together.The collector sheet is then revealed which outlines each of the 13 characters you can collect and a picture of their look and accessories. The girls were really excited by the wide variety of unicorns you could find in your capsule. Neve really wanted Stormy where as Erin really wanted the one that came with a mermaid’s tail. As with most collectible characters, some are more common than others, and there is even a super rare golden unicorn, which of course immediately made it onto their wishlist!
Whilst each capsule’s contents is a complete surprise (meaning unfortunately there is no guarantee of getting a particular character), the outfits and accessories are completely inter-changable, meaning the girls can swap outfits over and use them with any of the characters they revealed. Children could also swap duplicates with friends in an attempt to complete the entire collection.
The Fairy Unicorn Squad capsule splits into four different sections (a difference to the usual five!), the larger of which contains the unicorn character.The unicorn’s hair style needs clipping into place and depending on the character, this can be a little bit of an art form, with the ears needing to be poked through in just the right place.The girls loved the glittery unicorn horns, the unicorn’s huge expressive eyes and the long magestic tail with hair that could actually be plaited and styled.
The other sections of the Fairy Unicorn Squad Capsule contained the unicorn’s outfit and accessories including a pair of fairy wings and in most cases shoes or some kind of hat or headband. The wings again are a bit fiddly to put on and unfortunately Neve did manage to break some my being a bit overzealous in her attempts. The characters reminded the girls of LOL Surprise dolls – in particular with the way the shoes slot on and accessories clipped on to their backs. There is a small comb included as one of the accessories, but to be honest the girls didnt really use this very much, preferring to simply play with the hair and twist / braid it instead.
Each unicorn capsule also contains some fun puffy glitter stickers and these brightly coloured additions were a big hit with Neve!
Finally, and perhaps the most unique part of the Fairy Unicorn Squad capsules is the Unicorn Poop compound. The final segment of the capsule contains two small pieces of unicorn poop which when mixed together, change to a completely different colour. Our experience was that they were always the same colour once the two pieces were combined. I am not sure if this was a coincidence or whether they are always consistent in the colour that they change to – so I wont reveal the result in case it ruins the surprise! The material of the unicorn poop is like a cross between slime, blue tak and kinetic sand – very stretchy and mouldable and Erin really enjoyed squishing it like a miniature stress ball! 
Of all the Fairy Unicorn Squad characters we revealed, this one below was the girl’s favourite, mostly because she had a bit of a Princess Jasmine vibe going on with her hair style and accessories.

What we would change
It’s a shame that the capsules couldn’t be opened in a way that they could be re-sealed or closed, as the girls would use them for storing their characters / displaying them if they were more of a plastic stand / box. Unfortunately given that the capsules break into small sections, there is no real way of reusing them and as such they become plastic waste almost instantly. I also found that some of the accessories were quite fiddly and tricky to get on and a couple of wings and a pair of glasses were broken after just a short amount of play with Neve attempting to dress and undress her characters.
Overall, the plastic elements aside, the Unicorn Fairy Squad capsules are a fun collectible for Unicorn fans that are sure to be a big hit! You can learn more about ZURU 5 Surprise and the Unicorn Capsules at https://5surprise.zuru.com/
