A Day Out In DC: Planning A Day In The US Capital

This is a collaborative post

Washington DC is the capital of the US and is home to some of America’s most iconic landmarks. While there is a lot to see in DC, you can still enjoy a day trip to this city, while packing a lot in. Below are just a few ideas for making the most of a DC daytrip.

Consider a sightseeing tour

Sightseeing tours are one of the best ways to see all the different major landmarks and you’ll get to learn about their history en route. Popular attractions in these tours include the White House, the United States Capitol, The Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Monument and the Library of Congress. You can plan tours during the day or you can take a night tour (the latter can be less busy and you’ll get to see all the major landmarks illuminated). Compare tour prices online and book ahead in order to secure a ticket.

Walk the botanic garden

The United States Botanic Garden is definitely worth taking a walk through if you’ve got time. It’s the oldest operating botanic garden in the US and contains a vast array of different species of plant. One of its iconic features are its large greenhouses. Even if you don’t have much interest in plants, the Botanic Garden can serve as a nice break from the hustle-bustle of the city – it could be a nice attraction to plan after a busy morning tour of all the sights.

Visit a museum

There are lots of great museums in Washington DC that can allow you to learn more about the history of America, as well as art, science and nature. The Smithsonian museums are some of the most historic and most popular – you could spend several days just visiting these. There are also others such as the National Gallery of Art (this museum is sometimes open late at night, so if you’re looking to do something in the evening, this could be something to look into).

Check out the bars

There’s no shortage of great bars in the capital. When planning dates in DC, why not consider trying one of the local cocktail bars? You’ll find many of these spread out between Federal Triangle and Cardozo – Columbia Room, 600t and The Mirror are some of the most popular and famous bars in the city. There are also many traditional bars for those that just want to grab a beer, including some great bars that serve food.

See some live music

Washington DC has a fantastic live music scene. Not only can you catch lots of big acts here at the city’s stadiums, but you can also enjoy lots of smaller acts in more local venues. Jazz clubs are very popular in Washington DC – look out for events held at historic local venues such as Blues Alley if you love jazz. You can find dates for events online. Book tickets ahead to avoid disappointment.
