Creating a Cosy Home

Creating a Cosy Home

This is a collaborative post

The most important job your home should do is to make you feel safe, cosy and protected. Your home should be your refuge from the world, a place you can retreat to whenever life gets hard, and a springboard to leap back out from. With this in mind, the atmosphere created inside your home can have a huge effect on your mental health, so it’s important to make sure the spaces you’re living in are perfectly suited to your needs. Creating a cosy home can be a fun process, as you choose areas of focus, decorations, and other items to transform your space into the perfect hideaway. The rewards are also endless, and you’ll never stop thanking yourself for the gift of a home you can love forever.

The Perfect Couch

Let’s be honest, where do you spend as much time as possible when you’re at home, aside from sleeping in bed? The couch. This is the ultimate place of relaxation, where you can read, watch TV, or just generally chill out. To create a truly cosy home, your couch should be the first place you start. Of course, the perfect sofa will differ for each individual, but there are some elements you should always consider. What level of ‘give’ do you want – a sofa that sinks in as much as possible, or one that offers back support? What size do you need? It’s always best to visit a showroom and try out the options!

Colour and Materials

Colours and materials are absolutely key when it comes to creating a cosy atmosphere. You’ll want to shy away from bright, stark colours, and go for darker tones mixed with pastel shades to keep your home light and airy whilst offering comfort and style. In terms of materials, steer away from any metals and plastics, and towards wooden furnishings of any kind, which will add a softness. You can even get wood wall panels for every room which do a great job at instantly transforming a space into a cosy hideaway.

Lighting

Lighting can be a tricky element to get right. Too dim, and you risk your home becoming shadowy and dark, but too bright, and it can become stark and unwelcoming, even hurting your eyes. Investigate lightbulbs that give off a ‘warm’ light rather than a bright white, as these will light your home more gently. Light shades and chandeliers are also a great way to break up light, offering a more dappled effect and allowing you to light your home gracefully, achieving the best of both worlds.

A Cosy Kitchen

The kitchen can be one of the hardest rooms in the house to make cosy. After all, when you picture a kitchen, you often think of white walls, metal surfaces and sparkling clean appliances. Whilst this is a beautiful image, it’s hardly the rustic cosiness that you’re aiming towards. Well, never fear, there are some brilliant ways to add cosy elements to your kitchen without compromising on cleanliness and style. Have a look at copper or copper-coloured fixtures, including taps, kettles, pots and pans. Copper is a great metal as it still looks and feels gentle on the eye, and it can help bring a cosy colour to your kitchen without breaking the bank.
