Exploring internet safety with your child
This is a collaborative post
When it comes to the children of today’s day and age, it can be agreed that their childhood differs to that of the last generation. This is mainly due to the evolvement of technology and the internet. The internet can now be found absolutely everywhere, with full access to it portably on phones, tablets and laptops. This change has led to students using it daily for their learning as well as for leisurely purposes such as social media and gaming. Whilst the internet comes with many benefits, like anything else in life, it should be taught how to use in the correct way. Here are some tips on how to explore the internet safely with your child.
Explore the online world together
One of the best places to begin when trying to teach your child about the Internet is to explore it together. Go through child friendly search engines and allow your child to search up things that interest them. This is the perfect time to model safe searching and to point out websites and links that may be inappropriate. Show them which websites they can trust and what to look out for by pinpointing them. Use this opportunity to remind your child to be careful as they scour the web, and to come to you if they see anything that upsets them.
Play games together
Majority of the time, children become fascinated by the internet because of the opportunities it provides for fun and leisure. Rather than keeping your child away from it altogether, why not use this opportunity to play your child’s favourite games together and explore the excitement the internet has to offer. This is a great time to point out and explain safety features when your child plays online. Show them how they can block offensive players and flag comments that might be mean.
Watch shows and films together
Another reason the internet is in such high demand, is because it is home to major platforms that allow individuals to watch new and up to date shows. It is important to remember that your child is like any other and will want to take part in watching shows that intrigue them. Instead of risking them going behind your back and watching it, be open minded and watch tv shows and movies together. This will help your child understand why parental guidance is recommended with some shows and will allow for the two of you to take part in a bonding activity that could last for life!
