Is It Possible To Turn An Awkward Garden Into A Hospitable Green Space?

This is a collaborative post

Not all gardens are alike. It’s easy to think of the pastoral green backyard that many suburban or rural households have access to but of course, that image hardly covers all properties and their unique attributes.

If you’ve moved into a household with an awkward garden space, perhaps messy and unkempt, perhaps at a steep incline or decline, or maybe even suffering from land shift, you may assume that entertaining in this space is no longer on the cards.

But don’t be so sure. You’d be quite amazed at just how much control over your garden area you have, with the right investment, tolerance from your neighbors, and accepted planning permission.

It’s easy for us to say that of course, but more of a process in practice. So – is it possible to turn an awkward garden into a hospitable green space for hosting, parties, or simple relaxing? We believe it is, and here’s how to go about it:

Implementing A Staircase Area

Sure, you might have implemented level areas in a steep garden with a deep incline, but remember that not everyone will be able to climb up or down that so easily. This is where implementing a staircase area can be so helpful, with helpful handholds. While not all gardens have space for sidewinding ramps for disability access, making sure that at least the first area is easily accessible, and keeping any steep falls fenced off will ensure you manage the best of both worlds. Even better, integrating a deck extension can make the formatting seem more natural.

Refining Your Privacy Features

One awkward component of a garden is being located in a built-up area where many other houses may be able to see exactly what you’re doing in that space at all times. In some cases, this might be fine, but in others, you may wish to implement some of your privacy. Privacy fences, rudimentary treelines you can plant now and lead to large hedges and trees managed correctly, and large windbreakers or shelters can be a great compromise. This way, you can barbecue with your friends without being spied on.

Use Flower Beds To Liven The Space

Not all gardens are beautiful green areas, in fact, you might have moved into the house of a previous elderly person, who paved over the back yard for maintenance sake. You could lay turf of course, but it’s also true that adding some floral creativity in freestanding flower boxes can be a nice addition too.

This allows you to spend time on something wonderful and express yourself without necessarily having all the investments and elements of the garden together right now. Over time, this can grant you personality and a sense of comfort if you place garden furniture here to host with. It also means you can get used to growing flowers in a new climate if you’ve moved to quite far from your previous home. Any garden with well-kept flowers, no matter its wider characteristics, will be vastly improved.

With this advice, you’re certain to turn an awkward garden into a wonderful and hospitality green space.
