Money-Saving Tips for the Garden
This is a collaborative post
Gardening can sometimes be expensive, but right now, we are all looking to save money where we can. That doesn’t mean we can’t still enjoy gardening and our gardens, however.
If you have a garden, and you are looking for ways to save money while maintaining said garden, the tips below will certainly be of interest to you.
Take cuttings
If you cannot afford to buy plants and seeds, then take cuttings from plants that you come across in nature. Obviously, only take them from common land unless you have permission to do so, but taking a small cutting will not harm existing plants, and it will mean you can grow your own garden without spending very much money at all.
Invest in a rainwater tank
Water tanks can help you to save money by collecting rainwater so you can keep your garden fed without having to use water from the tap. Some water tanks can also be connected to your home supply so you can use it indoors too, but either way, if you have a water meter, you will definitely save money by collecting rainwater in a tank or even a water butt if you prefer.
Plant your leftovers
If you eat an apple, plant the seeds in your garden; if you make avocado on toast, keep the stone and grow your own; if you eat carrots, don’t throw the tops away, but save them and plant them in the oil to produce more in the future – there are so many foods we eat where the leftovers can be turned into plants for the garden, and what’s more, once grown, you can harvest them and eat them thus saving money on your food bills too.
Find a tool library
Many places these days have tool libraries where you can borrow gardening equipment like lawnmowers, spades, and hedge trimmers, so you do not need to go to the expense of buying your own. This is a great idea that enables you to get active and tend your garden no matter how tight your budget might be. More people should set up tool libraries, and more people should definitely make use of them where they are available.
Reuse plastic containers
Instead of buying lots of plant pots, use plastic yogurt pots and other food containers instead. They will do the job just as well and you can make them look pretty by painting them or doing a little decoupage to give them a bit of a makeover.
Join a gardening hobby group
Not only is it a great way to make friends, but when you join a gardening club, you will find that people will give you seeds and soil and equipment for free all the time and this will enable you to grow an amazing garden in no time at all.
So, there you have it – gardening does not have to be as expensive as you think, so get out there plant flowers, grow seeds, and have some fun!
