My Autumnal Home
#This is a collaborative post
I absolutely love this time of year. Unlike many people who dread the change of the clocks and the nights drawing in, I actually look forward to the winter months, when it gets darker early and the central heating comes back on. I am a real lover of the creature comforts and always have been, loving walking back through the door after a busy day at work to the comfort and familiarity of our own four walls, the place we call home 🙂
I like to make sure our home adapts and changes for the seasons, and there are a few features of my home that really help me embrace the start of Autumn.
Wooden flooring
You may think that wooden flooring would feel less comforting and cosy than carpets, and that I would miss that soft feeling underfoot, but honestly I don’t at all. Whilst we still have carpets in our living room, we have engineered wood flooring in our hall. Firstly, I love the fact that wooden floors easier to clean (meaning that all the muddy footprints that come traipsing into our hall are easy to wipe away), but we also have underfloor heating, meaning that when the shoes come off and are tucked away, you feel an immediate sense of warmth under your toes. Bliss. The thought of spending my life cleaning up muddy stains off a hallway carpet in a house with no porch just simply doesn’t appeal!
Blankets and throws
For me, there is no better feeling than snuggling up under a thick wool knitted throw or blanket on the sofa and hearing the rain hammering down on the windows outside. It makes me grateful for the small things and how lucky we are to be inside in the warm when others aren’t always so lucky. We have some absolutely huge throws in our home that normally live behind the sofas, but in Autumn and Winter, these stay out and are covered over all the entire family as we snuggle down before bed! 🙂 (It’s the simple things)
Baths before bed
In the Spring and Summer months, I absolutely love having a strong power shower first thing in the morning to wake me up and energise me for the day ahead, but in the winter, I am always thankful that we made the choice to keep a bath in our home. So many modern households have removed them from their bathrooms, but for me, there is nothing more homely than a deep bath full of bubbles before bed and relaxing until your fingers go wrinkly (if the kids will let you that is!)
Family meals at the table
In Spring and Summer, we eat a lot in the garden, or as much as I hate to admit it, on our laps in front of the TV. When the colder and darker months arrive, we tend to eat far more dinners together as a family, all eating the same thing and sitting together at the table. I LOVE chatting with the girls over dinner and I always say we should do it more. Last year we invested in a new large six seater dining table and chairs, which has since become a real focal point in our living space. From Sunday dinners to afternoon teas, its hosted more than its fair share of meals from the day to day to the special occasions!
Let there be light
From bedside lamps to dimmed central lights and even the glow of our Halloween pumpkins, there is something incredibly homely about the autumn glow of our homes, with curtains drawn and an extra layer on the bed sheets. I tend to like to keep the lights down low which has the added benefit of hiding a bit of the mess! 🙂
