As you will know from our previous Playmobil reviews, both of my daughters are HUGE fans of Playmobil, as am I – despite rapidly approaching *ahem* 40! I have loved Playmobil since my own childhood back in the 80s, and they never cease to amaze me with their ability to come up with even more exciting themes and bundles for children to play with creatively. Playmobil sets are ideal for allowing children to use their imaginations, and their NEW Magic theme sets have taken things to a whole other level – whisking children off to an underwater dreamworld full of mermaids, mermen, coral and underwater sea creatures!

We were sent an item from the Mermaid Playmobil range – Magic Mermaids Coral Marble Run from the Magic range to review (Playmobil 70094) which is retails at £64.99

What is the Playmobile Magic Undersea World? 

The Playmobil Magic Mermaids Coral Marble Run (Playmobil 70094) takes children far below sea level, where a colourful world, illuminated by magical pearls lies deep beneath the shore.

Here, the mermaids live peacefully together with many other sea creatures, that is until Sea King Segor threatens to capture the light of the pearls, risking the sea world being pushed into darkness!

The mermaids call on Prince Florin and Princess Finya from the Crystal Palace for help to try and stop Segor in his shark carriage!

The Playmobil Magic Mermaid World was awarded the Toy Award 2019 and the Golden Rocking Horse 2019!

There are a number of items in the Playmobil Magic range, all of which can be combined together to create an under sea world or played with individually as a self contained set.

Assembly of the Magic Mermaids Coral Marble Run (Playmobil 70094)

As with most Playmobil products, some initial assembly is required with the mermaid playmobil before you can play, so if you do have very excitable children that can’t wait to get started, they may need a bit of distracting whilst you set it all up.

The good news is that assembly of the playmobil mermaids coral marble run is relatively straight forward and took no longer than 15/20 minutes at a fairly leisurely pace. My eldest daughter (7) and I did this together; and she particularly enjoyed helping construct all the florals to bring the coral to life. The Instructions are relatively easy to follow; although we did find clipping the two halves of the large dome structure together a bit tricky as this did require quite a bit of force and I was worried that I might break the plastic!

There are 126 pieces in the 70094 Playmobil Magic Mermaids Cove Marble Run set and some of these are quite small; however the set is aimed at children aged four and above.

A real positive of this set is that comes with lots of additional characters – 5 in fact, which makes it a great stand alone starter set for the magic world without needing to buy lots of additional characters in order to start play.

There are a lot of plastic bags with the set; and I did find myself wondering if the sheer quantity of them was totally essential; but everything was clearly guided through so you could easily build it step by step.

Of all the assembly required, the bit that took the longest was the decorating of all the plants, however I was really impressed with the level of attention to detail, and the life like look and feel of the leaves and foliage. It really helped bring the mermaid world to life.

Once constructed, the set features a large marble run, where children can roll the pearl marbles roll down the coral run,  illuminating the light dome as they pass through before spiralling down the shoot and gathering on a lilly pad at the bottom.

Neve absolutely loved doing this, particularly as they spiralled towards the end before dropping through the hole. The pearls can be stowed away in the pearl container on the corals; however there are more marbles than places to store them.

The 70094 Playmobil mermaid characters included with the Magic Mermaids Coral Marble Run are really bright and colourful, with gorgeous outfits including lots of little accessories like capes, wrist cuffs and jewellery. The tails are articulated so that they can be moved, and have an almost rubber texture to the fins which is quite unique compared to the other Playmobil characters we have. The girls also have some really pretty hair styles – something that my two were particularly excited about!

As well as the marble run itself. the Playmobil Magic Mermaids Coral Marble Run includes a large lilly pond bed with two pillows where the mermaids can sleep, as well as some fish and dolphins so that the girls could act out little scenes.

The only real negative of the Playmobil Magic Mermaids Coral Marble Run set is the lack of storage. As a parent, I’d love Playmobil to start including more in their sets for storing the smaller pieces. In this case, the bed would have been PERFECT if the base had lifted up to stash the smaller pieces and accessories away when not in use. Without this, inevitably there is the risk some may get accidentally lost or discarded. The marbles being stored in the coral is great, but would be wonderful to have somewhere else to store the rest too.

There is however an additional set available (the Playmobil Mermaid Jewel case) to purchase separately which may solve this problem.

Overall, a really fun set with some beautiful floral detail and interactive game as well as imaginative character roll play; the girls loved the new Mermaid characters and are keen to expand the rest of the set!

What we loved:

• The Fins – the girls loved the rubber and very lifelike fins and outfits for their mermaids
• The florals – lovely attention to detail on the floral scenes
• The marble run was super fun (and would keep younger children entertained for hours)

What we didn’t:

• The amount of wrapping – it felt that there was a huge amount of plastic wrapping with this pack (and probably could have been in a smaller box too.
• Lack of storage for smaller parts.
