Renovating your living space on a budget
AD – This is a collaborative post
So after 6 months of lockdown and working from home, you’re bored of living in the same four walls. Whilst spending the last 6 months watching boxsets on your sofa you’ve also simulatenously been browsing mood boards for inspiration. Everyone else’s living rooms and bedrooms look so fabulous in comparison, but you don’t have the budget to do a complete overhaul. How can you renovate your living space without breaking the bank?
There are some very quick and easy ways to freshen up and breathe new life into your home without spending a fortune. Here are my tips for home renovations on a budget:
Change your wall colours
The walls that were once cream are now kind of beige, there are scuffs and marks on every wall surface, the paint has chipped or flaked and your toddler got more than a little creative with the wax crayons. When the room looks dull and dark, it’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do. Opt for fresh clean and light colours to create the illusion of space. You can even use a colour matching service to get the exact shade to match your furnishings should you wish to do so.
Create a feature or gallery wall
Creating a feature wall in your living room or kitchen really draws people’s attention and focus and completely overhaul the look and feel of a room. Painting one wall a bolder or brighter colour can be really effective, or using a statement wallpaper one one side of the room. Another option is to create a gallery wall using a variety of photos or prints; I love seeing these on staircases, particularly ones that showcase happy family memories.
Mount the TV
No one likes to see a mass of adapter plugs and trailing wires. To create more floor space in your living room, consider wall mounting your TV so that the cables are hidden behind the wall, This can be really effective and make the room appear less cluttered and full.
Wooden Floors
If your carpets could do with some love, consider switching them out for engineered wooden floors instead. Cheaper than hardwood flooring but with the same easy clean, fresh and hardwearing qualities, wooden floors can really modernise at room. Use a feature rug if you want to break up the room or if you are still craving that familiar sensation under your toes.
New curtains or blinds
The curtains and blinds you use in your home can have a huge impact on how dark and dull your room appears. Whilst darker curtains are ideal for blocking out unwanted light, they can also prevent natural daylight from coming in even when pulled back, which can be challenging if your room is on the small side. I would love to switch our dark heavy curtains out for some lighter shades. Don’t forget to look on buy and sell Facebook groups or marketplace for unwanted furnishings or furniture – when people redecorate, they often sell good quality items that no longer match their colour scheme, enabling you to save an absolute fortune on normal RRP.
