REVIEW – Fan Fan the Fawn
Fan Fan the Fawn – Our daughter is a MASSIVE fan of Sophie the Giraffe, and despite being 8 months and still having no teeth, she is showing all the signs of teething – dribbling, biting, knawing, and everything and anything going straight in her mouth!!! When we heard that Vulli had launched a new family member in the Sophie teether range, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on one, and Erin quite simply couldn’t wait to get her gums on one!!!
The Product
Just like Sophie, Fan Fan the Fawn is made using 100% natural rubber and food grade paint and is made to be perfectly suited to stimulating all of baby’s senses from the age of 3 months.
It draws baby’s gaze by way of the dark, highly contrasted spots all over its body and becomes a familiar, reassuring object that is easily recognised.
Featuring a whistle, Fan Fan the Fawn entertains baby and develops baby’s sense of hearing while helping to establish the relationship of cause and effect.
Flexible with several chewable parts (ears, legs etc) it is perfectly suited to help soothe baby’s gums when getting first teeth.
It is lightweight and perfectly suited for baby’s little hands and its long legs make it easy to hold.
The pleasant and unique smell of 100% rubber lends the toy its own character that helps baby to recognise it amongst other toys.

Our Experience
Our daughter was already a big fan of Sophie the Giraffe, and has previously used both the traditional Sophie, and the smaller vanilla Sophie teether, so we were reasonably confident that she would enjoy Fan Fan the Fawn.
Immediately after giving Fan Fan to Erin, she grasped it in her hands, softly rubbing its legs and ears, before reaching up and biting on its ears. She then quickly learned to turn Fan Fan around, where she had access to four individual legs to chew on, and at times would clamp down and tug with some force with the leg held down between her gums.
She was quite content sat playing with Fan Fan for some time. Unlike the traditional Sophie teether, Fan Fan has two areas that squeak – both the main centre of the body, and the actual head of the Fawn. This meant that as Erin was biting on the head of the teether, it let out a little squeak. She really seemed to enjoy the fact it was making some noise, and would noticeably listen to the noise, and return for another chew. The fact it is noisier than Sophie therefore means that you may not wish to use if you are going somewhere quiet, however in the comfort of your own home or when out and about, the whistle can really help teach your babies that their actions have a resulting affect.
Having played with the Fawn teether for a number of days now, she noticeably will pick the teether out amongst a selection of other toys, as if she knows that this is her preference for chewing on. When I put both sophie and Fan Fan in front of her, she chose Fan Fan. This may simply be because she is “new” and therefore more of a novelty, or it could be because she has become fond of the fact she can create some noise, I guess I will never know for sure!
Pros
- Perfect size for small hands, and with four spaced out legs, making it easy for little hands to grasp and move to mouth with ease.
- Durable, has been able to withstand some quite aggressive clamping and tugging from my teething daughter.
- An appealing friendly looking character.
- Made from soft and 100% baby safe rubber.
- Whistle is more easily ‘set off’ than in our traditional Sophie, making it great for teaching cause and effect.
- Soft texture means my daughter can bash around her face without causing any tears, unlike some of her other toys!!
- Small enough to pop into a changing bag.
- A great gift for fans of Sophie products.
Cons
- At £12.99 if you already have a Sophie, you may not wish to invest in Fan Fan as well, however we are massive fans of the Sophie range, and therefore would have probably bought one anyway just because – (who needs an excuse!)
- The whistle being more easily set off means that it is not as suitable as Sophie for quieter environments.
- As with the traditional Sophie, the product can gather dust and get dirty quite quickly if put down on carpet or surfaces, for that reason it is recommended that it is washed with hot water to ensure it remains hygienic for your child.
Overall, we really love Fan Fan the Fawn, and its great to see a new addition to the Sophie the Giraffe range. We think this would make a perfect gift for a new mum or mum to be, and where as they might be bought a Sophie from someone else, the Fawn is less likely to be duplicated!
