Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak from Wow Stuff REVIEW

We are MASSIVE fans of Harry Potter in this house, so were pretty excited to learn that just in time for Christmas 2019, a real life Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak was being released – perfect for muggles and wannabe wizards alike!
Having grown up as a teenager when the books were being released the first time around, it is so lovely to be now in a position to share the experience with my own daughter, watching the films, reading the books, visiting the Harry Potter locations around the UK and watching her immerse herself fully in the magical world of wizards and spells.
One of my favourite story lines from Harry Potter is in the Philosopher’s Stone where we are first introduced to the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak, given to Harry on his first ever Christmas at Hogwarts. At first, Harry just sees a giant cloak but Ron’s reaction when his body disappears is amazing! He is given just one message with it – USE IT WELL. As we well know, Harry goes on to use the Invisibility Cloak on his missions to defeat He Who Shall Not Be Named, taking it on lots of adventures and challenges beyond his years.
We have bought and reviewed a fair few Harry Potter toys, games and products before including the Harry Potter Sorting Hat and the Harry Potter Wizard Dueling Wands but the release of the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak was definitely something we were both excited to learn about, and couldn’t wait to give it a go!
About the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak
The concept of the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak is very simple. You simply download the app, pop on the cloak and there you have it – Mischief Managed!
The pack comes with a large sized cloak which has the traditional authentic old woven design on the one side, just like the one you will see in the movies. With a silk green lining on the reverse, this is the side which turns invisible when used alongside the app.
To use the cloak, you simply unpack it from the box, download the special free WOW Stuff app (available on Apple and Android) and enter the unique code on the instructions to link the two together.
Using the stand included in the box, you set up the scene you want to use, and set the app into invisible mode. You can then set a timer countdown to give you time to prepare, and flick between still images or video recording depending on the footage you wish to capture.
Whilst the cloak is worn with the green side facing outwards, the green screen effect will make you appear to be invisible, meaning you can create floating heads or moving objects whilst your body seems to disappear. You can see it in action in my video below.
How does the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak work?
The Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak works via green screen, and using the app the green colour of the cloak blends in with the background whatever you put it on, creating the illusion of invisibility. Unfortunately, as some muggles will be disappointed to learn, the cloak doesn’t actually make you disappear in real life (sorry), but using the WOW stuff app, you can take photos and produce videos where you body has seemingly disappeared.
What mischief would you get up to? We’ve been having a right laugh using the invisibility cloak around our home. Imagine taking this along to the Warner Bros Studio Tour and wearing it in The Great Hall??
Our Experience of the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak
The Harry Potter Invisibility cloak is very easy to use, with minimal initial set up, although I have learned in recent weeks that I definitely do need to work on my cloak swishing technique!
It’s important to note that you have to keep the camera still – you cant just hold in your hands otherwise it won’t work properly. Because of this, the little stand included in the box is really helpful, allowing you to prop it up to easily record the scene you would like as your back drop.
It is worth noting that when you first set the scene, the background needs to be completely still and therefore keep pets and other people out the way until its captured. Occasionally something moved in the background whilst I was recording the initial scene and this affected the green screen so had to shoot again, but I very quickly got the hang of it.
I think the app is very clever – developed by WOW Stuff in collaboration with Warner Bros, the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak is a fab fun interactive way to recreate iconic scenes from the Harry Potter films – the only downside is that the quality of the image is limited to the quality of your camera – and as someone who likes higher quality images on my camera this is a minor niggle!
The cloak itself is on the large side, and therefore would be likely to completely swamp smaller children (Erin is 6 and this would probably be very long on her). That said, it’s great that this is a product which can be used by children and adults alike, unlike some of the other Harry Potter products which tend to focus on the younger Potter fan!
The pattern on the outside of the cloak is detailed and authentic, and even without the app it could be worn as a fun fancy dress outfit for Harry Potter parties. It comes with a clasp on the neck so you can fasten and don’t have to hold it in place. This is ideal as it leaves both your hands free for mischief!
Overall verdict
The Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak has an RRP of £59.99 – this is obviously a pretty high price tag, for what essentially is a dressing up cloak with a twist and I do worry that the novelty will soon wear off! However, that said I think the Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak would be an absolutely brilliant product to have at Harry Potter parties.
For Potterheads – the cloak itself is attractive and great for dressing up / cosplay! If you are planning a Harry Potter party with the Sorting Hat and this, it would make a great pair – you could snap photos of each child or do a little video with a Harry Potter backdrop as a great way for people to record their attendance, think that would go down a real treat.
