REVIEW – Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic (Season 5)

Those who follow us regularly will know that Erin is a BIG fan of surprise reveal toys. She has loved Hatchimals CollEGGtibles since they were first launched as a spin off from the larger Hatchimals toy back in 2017, and since their release we have developed quite a collection of these miniature cute characters in our home!!

If you find yourself asking What are Hatchimals CollEGGtibles (and if that’s the case, seriously where have you been), these mini eggs are a fun and collectible surprise pocket money priced toy (unlike their more expensive cousin!). Each tiny egg has a small heart in the centre, which you rub to turn from purple to pink, before pushing down to crack open the shell and reveal the mini character inside. With each series there are a number of different families and characters to collect, some more rare than others, and little ones will love trying to collect them all tick them off the collector sheet.

Hatchimals CollEGGtibles have developed and changed somewhat over the years. Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Season 2 introduced more glittery, sparkly and fluffy characters, as well as colour change technology, Season 3 introduced the possibility of Hatch Friends Forever and twins – (two hatchimals inside one egg!) and Season 4 introduced was based on shine bright, with characters that glow bright when placed on a light, as well as metallic and glow in the dark designs. You’d be mistaken for thinking that by now they must have run out of creative ideas, but it appears that Spinmaster still have plenty of variations of the classic up their sleeve!

When Erin heard that a new series of Hatchimals CollEGGtibles was being launched which combined her love of collectible surprises and MERMAIDS, she absolutely couldn’t wait to get her hands on them. Introducing Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Season 5 – Mermal Magic!!!

What’s different about Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic?

Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic include a range of pretty seashell shaped eggs, with ombre sheeny and colourful designs. The hatching process remains the same, but inside there are a wide range of under the sea style characters, including some with their very own mermaid tails. The characters include colour change technology, meaning that parts of their body change colour when under warm water. When removed from the water, they fairly rapidly return to their original shade.

Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic are available in a variety of different pack sizes, the majority of which are pocket money prices, which is ideal as children are going to enjoy collecting them all.

The smallest and cheapest option is the single surprise box which includes one Hatchimal CollEGGtible inside. It is not possible to see which ‘family’ this egg belongs to from the outside, so whilst there is the chance of getting duplicates, children may want to swap and trade with friends once hatched.

The Seashell shaped eggs in Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic are quite a different shape and texture to the traditional eggs and as such, with a slightly more rough and glittery surface, Erin found them just that little bit harder to get the heart to change colour. I generally found that I had to ‘start it off’ whilst she then did the final few rubs before the shell could be cracked.

Each box comes with the Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Season 5 collector sheet, which includes a map showing where all the characters live, as well as the different families to which the character belong. As always some are common and others rare and super rare. As in Season 3, there is a small selection of eggs which contain two characters or Mermal Twins, as well as some special edition characters that can only be found in the larger pack sizes.

Erin was a big fan of the colour change technology, and enjoyed dipping them into warm water and watching them change colour in front of her eyes. When you take them out of the water and they will revert back to their original colour, very quickly in fact, so it is quite fascinating to watch!

There are over 80 different NEW characters to collect in Hatchimals Season 5 Mermal Magic, from 6 different families, and to prevent huge amount of duplication, some of the families have different egg colours, making it that little bit easier to collect the ones you need to complete your collection.

  • Mischief Marsh – Gold egg
  • Sunshine Surf – Emerald Green Egg
  • Racing River Hatchimals – Purple Egg

The Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic 2 pack comes with a little nest, which is a fun way to play with the characters or store them when not in use. These packs can include a variety of different coloured eggs, meaning you can choose carefully in store when trying to find characters from a particular family.

If you are willing to spend a bit more the Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic four pack comes with one bonus reveal Hatchimal, who is hatched and ready to play with straight away.

For the largest size packs, there are special colour eggs – bronze for the 6 packs and turquoise for the 12 packs. This is a change from previous series and does mean that children are going to want parents to purchase the larger pack sizes in order to try and collect all the different characters. Whilst this is fun for the kids, it might be less good news for the parents, who may already be pressured into spending a lot of money trying to collect the range.

That said, for birthday gifts, the 6 pack with its shell case is a little bit special. The case comes in either glittery pink or puple, and inside are 6 bronze eggs as well as a small pack of Hatchimals stickers. From a parents point of view the case is a great idea, as it becomes a great container for storing all the characters once they are hatched.

The Sapphire Springs characters that are found within the bronze eggs are each holding their own precious gemstone, and the gems change colour when popped into warm water.

Erin has had great fun playing with the Hatchimals CollEGGtibles Mermal Magic range, and some of the underwater characters are extremely cute, with the little clam in his shell, puffer fish and starfish being Erin’s personal favourites. Whilst it can often feel like much of the collectible surprise reveal toy concept has been done before, Hatchimals do appear to have managed to still capture Erin’s imagination and pull her into their world every single time!
