The Gift of Memories with Rosemood Stationery
#AD – This is a collaborative post
Anyone who knows me well will know that I’m never far away from my camera. I love capturing the little snippets of my family’s life on film – from the tiny moments and everyday events to the big milestones and celebrations. For me, photos are a great way of catching and retaining memories, and as someone who’s Mother was almost religious about updating photo albums (even in the years before digital cameras), I feel I owe it to my children to have the same access to records of their childhood, as I have of mine! Photos also tell stories, so even the act of looking at them can take you back to that moment, and help you share it with those who couldn’t be there on the day.
When it comes to buying Christmas gifts for my Mother & Father in law – the girls’ grandparents who are such a huge, much loved and valued part of our lives; the choice is no longer difficult. I first bought them a photo calendar when Erin was just one, personalised with an image of Erin on every single page. I worked really hard to select the perfect image to represent each month, and despite knowing deep down that they would love it, their reaction came as quite a surprise. They didn’t just love it – they really, REALLY loved it.
Of all the gifts they received that Christmas, this was the one that had the most impact. They flicked through the pages (more than once or twice) and smiled with every turn, laughing at their happy little faces before finding a pride of place spot in their kitchen, where it would be seen every morning whilst they made their morning brew.
Ever since that first Christmas calendar gift, there has been that familiar shaped parcel under their tree. A new Christmas tradition.
Every year, Mick (yes the one who is the real Father Christmas) will start to drop not so subtle hints in November, checking that there would be another one coming to replenish that spot in their kitchen. We pass one over every Christmas morning, knowing full well that despite it being lovingly wrapped in festive paper and ribbon, that everyone in the room of course knows what’s going to be inside. But they love it. The anticipation of seeing those images inside, seeing how much the girls have grown, and getting more insight into all the adventures they’ve been on over the last 12 months, is worth its weight in gold.
Last year, Mick even decided not to flick through the images from the outset, wanting instead to have a pleasant surprise as they turned over the page on the 1st of every month. It’s took some willpower, but he’s done it. (I think Dee on the other hand couldn’t resist a little peak!)
If you’re struggling to think of a Christmas gift for your children’s grandparents or your own grandparents this December, then for me there is no better choice. These photo calendars allow grandparents to be close to their grandchildren every single day, and for those who live further afield or live alone, this sight of their loved ones smiling back at them each morning can be a really welcomed treat. Unlike other gifts which can quickly be forgotten about or discarded, this is a gift that stays with them for the whole 12 months, providing warm feelings and memories that’ll last a whole lot longer.
