The Ultimate Icelandic Spa Break

The Ultimate Icelandic Spa Break

*This is a collaborative post

After 15 weeks of lockdown, many of us are desperately longing for some much needed me time. We’ve juggled home schooling and working from home, spent time separated and socially distanced from friends and family and now as life is slowly starting to return to some sort of normality, we’re all dreaming of the prospect of some child free relaxation and pampering!

If you are looking for the ultimate spa weekend with your partner or a close group of friends; then there is no finer spa than the Blue Lagoon in Iceland, not far from the capital and countries largest city of Reykjavik. I was lucky enough to visit The Blue Lagoon after my Trek Iceland experience back in 2009, and I simply cannot wait to return as soon as we are able. It’s easy to see why The Blue Lagoon is Iceland’s most visited tourist attraction, with 80% of people visiting the country paying a visit during their trip.

If you’re tempted by the prospect of the ULTIMATE pamper experience, in surroundings your will remember forever, keep an eye out on Icelandic Spa Deals at Voyage Prive to make the most of your trip with add-ons and luxurious accommodation.

Here’s what you need to know about the Blue Lagoon, Iceland’s ultimate spa day

  • The Blue Lagoon is 30 miles from Reykjavik and just 13 miles from Keflavik Airport, making it a great place to stop off whilst visiting Iceland for business or pleasure. I visited after 4 days hiking on a British Heart Foundation exhibition from Landmannahellir to Thorsmork, with 7-10 hours of trekking each day. As you can imagine, after this amount of physical exertion, an afternoon at a spa was just what the doctor ordered!
  • The Blue Lagoon is known for its iconic milky blue water; and its geothermal temperatures run at a steady 104 degrees Fahrenheit. With the steam rising from the waters it feels almost other worldly and has to be experienced to be believed. Even on a day when its cool outside, you can sink under the depths of the water, like stepping into a warm bath!
  • Surrounded by volcanic rocks, the Blue Lagoon is a great place to relax and unwind, taking advantage of the white silica mud masks that are famous for their skin healing properties. Spread over your face and body, and watch as the white silica hardens within 5-10 minutes. Wash away to leave your skin feeling super smooth, supple and reenergised (you can buy some products in the shop too!). The minerals rich water can leave your hair feeling a bit odd, so I would recommend tying it back or making use of the leave in conditioner that is present in the showers before and after your swim.
  • Using a wrist band for contactless payment, you can swim up to the lagoon bar to buy your tipple of choice. Perhaps embarrassingly mine was a diet coke, but you can treat yourself to something stronger if you prefer.
  • One thing to be aware of is that you do need to shower completely nude before entering the geothermal pools, and the changing rooms are communal. At first I found this a little daunting; but you soon realise that no one gives a damn! If you feel particularly uncomfortable with stripping off in front of strangers, you can pay extra for a luxury entrance fee, giving you access to changing rooms which offer a little more privacy! You’ll be reassured to know that the pools themselves require bathing suits, so no skinny dipping required!

Iceland is a truly amazing part of the world and I would go back in a heartbeat. Have you been to the Blue Lagoon? What was your highlight?
