Tips To Help You Move Home More Easily

This is a collaborative post

There are several reasons why someone would want to move, including the necessity to move for work, the desire to be closer to friends and family, plans to start a new life in a new location, or, probably most often, the need to find a bigger space to live in owing to an expanding family. Whatever the cause, moving is never seen as a pleasurable or straightforward task. Many people say it’s one of the most difficult, stressful moments of their lives, and they would only do it if they had to.

So, if you must or choose to move, how can you make the process smoother and less stressful? Here are some pointers to get you started.

Have A Good Packing System

Packing ahead of time can help to ensure that your house move is as stress-free as possible. This is because, rather than hurrying and attempting to do everything with little time to spare, you can take your time and complete your packing at a calm pace. However, if you do this, be sure you stick to a regular packing plan and provide plenty of time for everything to be completed before moving day.

Aside from your packing plan, you should also consider how you pack and which things to pack first. Begin with the room or part of the home that receives the least amount of usage to make things much simpler. Start with your extra bedroom, attic, shed, or even the cupboard under the stairs. If you start to run out of space to keep all those packed boxes and you still have a few weeks before your move, use a self storage container – in that way, they’re not taking up space, and you’ll know where everything is.

Pack daily and important goods last since you don’t want to be fumbling through previously packed boxes looking for stuff you shouldn’t have packed so early in the first place. Speaking of basics, you should put yours (phone chargers, keys, IDs, wallet, medication, toiletries, a change of clothing, etc.) into a separate bag that you can bring with you on moving day. You’ll want to have access to these goods before you start unpacking those crates.

Schedule Utilities As Soon As Possible

Once the dates are set, call your utility companies to arrange for service at your new house. You don’t want to arrive exhausted after the move only to discover that the power, water, or heat is turned off. Make a plan ahead of time and keep track of your requests in your moving folder. Don’t forget not only to connect things at your new place, but to disconnect them at the old one too – you don’t want to be paying twice.

Make A Moving Folder

We mentioned your moving folder in the point above, and that is a truly priceless element in anyone’s house move. This is the place where all your quotes for services like a removals firm or storage facilities can go. It’s also where you can keep all the paperwork for your house purchase, or the lease if you are renting your next property. In fact, this folder – separated into different sections – should be the one place where everything you need or your move can quickly and easily be found.

Although having a physical folder might seem rather old-fashioned, it’s actually better than having a computerised one, at least in this situation. That’s because you can easily make amendments and see at a glance what needs to be done next. You can tick things off your moving list, and that physical act is beneficial as it will make you feel you are accomplishing things, and it will be a quick reminder of what is left to do.

Invest In Equipment

Stock up on moving equipment well in advance of the move itself. The last thing you want to do is have to hurry to the shop for more important things when you’re meant to be packing or doing one final big clean. So what do you need? At the very least you’ll need the boxes themselves, sticky labels, tape, bubble wrap (or other packing material), and a marker pen. It’s also wise to have black bin bags, as you’re sure to create a lot of rubbish.

For bigger things, consider renting moving equipment from a moving company. Of course, if you hire a moving company, they will definitely have their own, which is another advantage of hiring experts if you can. Whether you purchase, rent, or borrow them, make sure you have furniture covers, a furniture dolly, and straps or rope available during the move.
