Traditional and Sustainable Toys with Jaques of London

AD – This post is in collaboration with Jaques of London

Christmas is fast approaching and like many families across the UK, we are becoming increasingly aware of climate change. This year more than ever, I am trying hard to look for toys which involve less plastic, are more sustainable and eco-friendly and that truly last the test of time.

We have previously had a number of wooden toys from Jaques of London and have been really impressed. Their wide range of high quality, beautifully packaged wooden toys are a great option for providing some wholesome screen-free family fun for children big and small.

If you’re looking for some plastic-free toys for your children this Christmas, here are just a couple of our favourites from the Jaques of London wooden toy collection.

The Traditional Family Game

One of my favourite games as a child was Snakes and Ladders – I used to love the excitement and anticipation of moving my brightly coloured piece along the board, coupled with the anxiety of approaching a snake just as I had got into the lead!

What I didn’t realise however was that Jaques of London actually invented snakes and ladders back in n 1873 – as such, they have been making snakes and ladders for over 140 years!

This reversible wooden Snakes and Ladders game makes an ideal gift for game players of all ages. Not only does it come beautifully packaged in historical paper and eco-friendly cardboard packaging, but this durable wooden board game is actually two games in one!

First up, on the one side, is the family classic game Snakes and Ladders. Suitable for up to four players, this is a game that the whole family can enjoy together.

Roll the dice to make your way up and across the board. If you’re lucky enough to land at the base of a ladder, you can climb up and progress to the finish far more quickly. Watch out for those snakes however, as these slippery spirals will force you to glide right back down to where you started. The first player to reach the end is the winner!

The game of snakes and ladders is not only great for building social and communication skills, but also important life skills such as taking turns and not to celebrate too soon! 🙂 Things don’t always go to plan!

When you fancy a change, flip the game over, and open the additional pieces from the small canvas bag included with the set to play Ludo – another great traditional family game.

Indoors and Outdoors

For Wooden Toys that can be enjoyed inside and out, you simply cannot go wrong with the Jaques Tumbling Tower.

The Magnum Tumble Tower is a superb family garden and backyard game which builds a tower 25″ tall. As game play continues, players can go on to construct a tower which, can reach over 3ft in tumbling excitement!

Hand crafted using New Zealand pine from sustainable sources, The Jaques Giant Tumbling Tower comes packaged in a durable canvas carry bag, and includes 63 blocks individually hand finished wooden blocks.

A game of concentration, hand to eye coordination and problem solving, players take it in turns to sneak a piece out from the tower without and place it back on the top without tumbling the tower, but be careful, the taller the tower gets, the greater the risk of making it fall!

The girls absolutely loved playing with the Giant Tumbling Tower in our garden – gently poking, prodding and manoeuvring pieces before laughing in delight as they successfully managed to add them back on the top. Be careful which piece you pick – as one wrong move and the whole tower comes tumbling down!

The Jaques Giant Tumbling Tower is ideal for garden parties, birthdays or lazy Sunday afternoons and also makes a great imaginative toy for building all kinds of fun creations too!
