Utlising the space of a child’s box room

Let’s face it, children are often lumped with the box bedrooms, even though they are probably the ones in the family that are going to spend the most time in there. In our house Neve, being the 2nd born child inevitably drew the short straw, being left with the only room that wasnt already been used – the one that had previously been used for storage and items to sort.

I mean, we all do the same when deciding who gets what room, so in no way am I trying to make you feel guilty, but it is important that you ensure your children have enough floor space to play and draw so that they don’t take over the whole house.

Here are five ways that you can tactically make the box bedroom in your house have more floor space, without moving any furniture into another room:

Buy the Right Bed

There are different types of beds for children, and your best option would to invest in a bed that has plenty of storage so that it technically works as a bed and wardrobe. Single beds with storage are good options for children, as they’re not too big and you’re able to store all of your child’s clothes, board games or shoes underneath the bed, and access it with ease.

However, if you’re looking for something slightly more practical then children’s cabin beds are fabulous for the older children that come home from school with homework. They usually come with an attached desk and added storage, so it will save you trying to make an awkwardly shaped desk fit in a box bedroom. Plus, it is cost effective as you won’t need to splash out on several bits of furniture.

Add Shelves

Shelves don’t take up any floor space, so they are great in a child’s bedroom for displaying books, trophies and toys. Just make sure that they’re high enough so that your little ones don’t bang their heads.

Use Mirrors

While mirrors technically won’t give you extra floor space, they can give the illusion that the room is bigger than it actually is, when placed right. Using a focal point and angling mirrors towards that will make the room seem deeper. Plus, mirrors will reflect the light which will brighten up the room; another tactic used to make the room seem bigger.

Clothes Rails

Wardrobes are often big and clunky and can take up a lot of floor space. If your child doesn’t have that many pieces of clothing, then clothing racks could be a better option. These can fit in weird bedroom corners and can be wheeled around with ease when they get slightly in the way.

Fun Storage Boxes

It might be worth investing in some storage boxes for your child’s bedroom, as these can be stacked on top of each other rather than taking up a lot of floor space, and put into smaller spaces, such as under the bed. You could also invest in some fun boxes with their favourite patterns on, which should encourage your children to start putting things away.

If your child is in the box room, what other tips do you have to make the most of a small space?
