When should your toddler get his first haircut?

#This is a collaborative post.

Many parents get confused about when to cut their toddler’s first hair. Whereas some believe that is a requirement of every newborn, others believe that cutting the hair makes it grow even faster. It becomes very hard for parents to decide when to cut it since there are no set deadlines on when and how the same should be conducted.

Whereas some babies are born with little hair, others are lucky to have their heads full. Unfortunately, others do not even enough to have even a few strands on their little heads. The amount of hair on a baby’s head is completely dependent on his genetic composition. The first hair of every baby is quite delicate and tends to fall off in the
first few days. This is often noticeable in the back where the baby rests.

So, when is the right time to cut that delicate hair?
As seen above, there is no specified time on when one should cut it. It solely depends on the wishes of the parents. Common sense also comes in since there are some instincts will keep on reminding you that it is time to take some scissors. As you go through the process, there are certain things to put into consideration;

● There is a need to regulate the temperature of the baby’s head. Once you make your first cut, ensure that the baby is not exposed to the cold.

● Babies go through a lot of changes once they are born. As soon as they step into the world, they are faced with new stimuli. It would be absurd to cut the hair immediately after birth since the adaptation would not be easy. The best way is, therefore, to wait for one or two months before having the first haircut.

● The other reason why we should wait for the baby to be older is so that the baby can sit up and support his head, making the process far more comfortable than when they are smaller.

How different parents cut their babies’ hair:

  • Some parents cut the hair themselves at home. This is very easy since all you need are clean blunt-ended scissors.
  • Use of electric clippers. With them, you need to go slowly on your child and apply very little pressure on their delicate skin. It is recommended that one uses andis clipper comb attachments to cut kids’ hair to the desirable size.
  • Shave the hair when the baby is seated comfortably. A baby’s strands are fine and it is unnecessary to wet their hair. For this reason, you can pick the best moment to cut it either when they are playing with their toys or when they have just fed and they look happy.

For your first shave, it is recommended that several measures are considered. The first one is on the safety of the baby. For this matter, always ensure that you hold the baby’s head tightly to prevent them from tilting and being cut in the
process.

Secondly, ensures that your tools of work such as clippers and scissors are out of reach for the baby. This is important especially for those babies who are used to moving their hands around without the help of their parents.

Thirdly, wait for the right time to cut the hair. Babies get irritated with even the slightest of sounds. The sound of hair cutting or foreign objects on their heads can be upsetting to them. It is therefore important that you wait until they have relaxed. If they seem restless, one should leave it for another day.

In conclusion, there is no right time for one to cut their baby’s hair. This is because some are comfortable to carry it out at birth whereas others wait for weeks or months. Regardless of when you choose to, ensure that safety is considered,
and accidents are avoided at all cost.
