5 Tips To Make Your Attic Conversion Into A Great Family Room
*This is a collaborative post.
If you’re lucky enough to have converted your attic, this can be an ideal space for a family room. A family room should offer something for the whole family, providing entertainment for the youngest child to the oldest parent. It also needs to be hard-wearing so it will stand up to lots of use and some rough treatment from the kids. If you can design your attic space to work hard and look good you’ll have a great family room for all the family to enjoy.
- Make a snack eating station. If you have a large enough space, you can put a dining table in the room for eating snacks and more casual meals. If there isn’t enough room for a proper table, then you can use the coffee table as a double duty snacking table. Keep some floor cushions or small stools stored under the coffee table so they can be quickly pulled out and used as seating for the kids to sit at the coffee table to eat. If the kids can sit up to eat, there’ll be fewer crumbs on your sofa!
- Add lots of rugs and throws. An attic space can easily be made really cozy and ‘snug’ like by adding plenty of throws to add soft textures. A rug in front of the TV can make a great place for the kids to lounge, while also adding some color and warmth to the room. Add plenty of blankets to the sofa and chairs for wrapping up in together on move nights.
- Find the right seating options. A large sectional sofa is a great option for a big family, as there’s lots of space on it for the whole family to spread out in comfort. If you can’t get a sofa like this up the attic stairs, you could instead add a mix of different kinds of seating so people can choose a spot to call their own. A small sofa, a set of armchairs, and some more fun seating choices like beanbags are good options and add something for kids and parents.
- Get creative with colour. The family room is an ideal room to decorate with different colours than you might risk in the rest of the house. Add pops of bright, cheerful colour with throw cushions, blankets, and ornaments. Lighting can also be used to add colour, such as Lepro LED strips. LED strips come in lots of colours and will look great around beams or other interesting architecture of the attic conversion. This will show off the conversion at its best while adding something fun to the decor.
- Add in storage. The family room is used for lots of different kinds of family fun, from watching movies to playing board games with the kids. Add in some storage options for all the kit for these activities. Turn the awkward spaces that attic conversions often have into shelving or cupboards. Choose furniture with plenty of storage space built-in, which you can use this space to store games, craft supplies, DVDs, and CDs.
