Back to the Garden with Sudocrem
#AD – This post is in collaboration with Sudocrem
Like many parents across the UK, we have spent the last 5 weeks at home with our children, trying to adapt to our ‘new normal’. We’ve been desperately trying to find new and exciting ways to entertain the girls whilst attempting to balance the plate juggling challenge that is working from home, self employment and home education, and where possible, retain some ounce of sanity and routine that the girls were used to.
One activity that the girls have really enjoyed is getting outside into our garden, which I am, without a doubt, more grateful for than I have ever been before. We recently set up a challenge with my sister to see who can grow the biggest sunflower, all planting our seeds at exactly the same time. The girls have taken responsibility for planting, watering and nurturing their seeds and seeing their little faces when they see a new leaf arrive or them grow a little bit taller is a lovely sight to see.
This Spring, Sudocrem has teamed up with Britain’s top gardeners all across the UK for a nationwide gardening project #backtothegarden, an initiative to get families planting and growing, wherever they are and show how gardening with kids can be straight forward, soothing, relaxing and fun. You don’t even need a garden to take part – a window sill, balcony or allotment will also work just as well.
There are LOADS of positives to growing and planting seeds with children including:
- Screen free activity – I am sure I won’t be the only one who is a bit worried about the amount of time the girls spend on the iPad or watching TV whilst the schools are closed. Planting seeds is an educational and interactive activity which gets them up off the sofa and moving, without a blue screen in sight.
- Long term focus – Unlike some activities which are done and dusted in the blink of an eye, planting takes time, with the children having to go back to daily and nurture their seedlings! A project rather than a one off task, this is something that will hold their attention long term.
- Fresh air and vitamin D – If you are lucky enough to be able to plant in your garden as opposed to a window sill or window box, getting outside in the fresh air can help increase the hormone serotonin which improves their wellbeing and helps encourage a good nights sleep! Vitamin D from the sunshine (even if it looks like it hiding behind the clouds) is also important for building strong bones and muscles.
- Freedom – Planting is a great way to allow children to get their hands dirty, give them freedom to explore, and help them to learn about and follow instructions
- Achievement – Watching as nature’s creations come to life gives children a real sense of achievement, with a measurable and tangible outcome to celebrate their hard work.
As part of the #backtothegarden campaign, Sudocrem will be sharing top tips and advice on potting plants, keeping them healthy and spotting weeds, as well as some super fun projects that the kids will love. These tips are being shared daily from now on the Sudocrem Back to the Garden website until the 30th June, so plenty of inspiration to kick start those green fingers!
As a hands on activity, gardening can be a little bit harsh on delicate skin, with exposure to water, digging in mud and using tools risking the odd scraped knee or dry areas. That’s where Sudocrem comes in! My Little Sudocrem comes in a 22g pot for just £2.99, or for an extra treat you can even order personalised pots online!
Thanks to the team at Sudocrem we have THREE gardening indoor or outdoor goody bags to give away to kick start your Spring planting projects.
