Beautiful Children’s Bedrooms on a Budget
AD
The moment when your baby’s nursery gets converted into a child’s bedroom can be a pretty exciting time. Now that Neve is two and a half, we will be soon waving goodbye to her cot – the one she has slept in since she was a teeny tiny baby – and converting her bedroom into her very own grown up space. It’s an emotional time for me (particularly as she’s my last child!) so I want the experience to be special for both of us, but at the same time we don’t have a huge budget to spend. The cost of decorating a child’s bedroom can prove expensive but it doesn’t have to be! Having done similar for my eldest just a few years ago, here are my hints and tips for creating a beautiful children’s bedroom on a budget.
Think multi-functional – Whether you are limited on physical space or not, I would recommend that you opt for multi functional furniture, and something that will grow with your child. Whilst they are younger, a good quality bed and bookcase may be their main essentials, however as they get older, they accumulate their fair share of ‘stuff’ and as such, may require more storage space, a place to do their homework or want somewhere comfortable to chill and listen to music / play games.
No one wants to be changing their furniture on a regular basis as their child rapidly outgrows it, and the cost of doing so can soon add up. Cabin beds and high sleeper beds are ideal, particularly those with integrated storage and desk space, providing a range of options that span far beyond bedtime.
Erin absolutely loves her cabin bed, and now she is older, we have been able to move a lot of her toys into her bedroom, making use of the storage boxes in the sides of her bed. This also has the added benefit of giving back a bit of adult space in our living room too! To shop kids beds for sale click here.
Stick with Simple
Where possible I would avoid having wallpaper or furniture that is based on a particular character or TV programme, no matter how much they may beg you for a Cinderella wardrobe or Toy Story bed. Your child is likely to outgrow this and change their preferences, and all of a sudden, it’s no longer their character of choice and they’ll be asking for something new.
Instead opt for a simple colour wall covering or paint (ideally one that is wipe down for easy removal of scuffs and marks) and use accessories and décor to bring in their colour and personal preferences. It is far cheaper to update bed sets cushions and curtains than it is to reinvest in a whole new range of bedroom furniture.
Wall stickers are a great option for adding a touch of personality to a room without being a permanent feature and come in a huge variety of colours and designs. They are generally very easy to apply by an adult, but can be removed without leaving sticky marks or residue.
Get Crafting
For a fun and cheap way to add a bit of personality to your child’s bedroom, why not make some of your own accessories and decorative items? Prints in frames can be really striking and are easy to create yourself – or why not display some of their favourite art work in frames, swapping and updating their artwork as the seasons change?
For a pretty and playful feel, you can even make your own bunting using small scraps of fabric from outgrown clothes or charity shop finds. These can be tailored to suit any style and colour scheme, are cheap and easy to make, and you can even get the kids involved with their creation too – helping them bring their own sense of identity into their bedroom space!
Me and Erin are currently working on making bunting for Neve’s bedroom using some of her first baby grows. This is not only a great way to recycle and save money, but has a lovely sense of nostalgia and helps capture some memories too.
Update the bedding
It’s amazing how much of a difference you can make to your child’s bedroom just by investing in a new set of bedding. I tend to buy these in the Boxing Day sales as often the prices are slashed to half the cost, and then save them up for as and when they are required. I would also recommend keeping an eye on the Facebook Buy and Sell Groups – quite often when children get older and want to change the theme of their bedroom parents may sell bundles of bedroom décor that they no longer need- someone else’s junk is another man’s treasure as the saying goes!
I will be sharing more updates on Neve’s room makeover soon but in the meantime I am off to sob into my coffee.
How did you create your child’s bedroom on a budget?
