REVIEW – Britannica Children’s Non Fiction Magazine

Ad – This post is in collaboration with Britannica Magazine

Wherever possible, I try and encourage the girls to enjoy screen-free entertainment as much as possible. I’m lucky that they are both avid readers and love sitting down with a book as a way to relax. They both have curious minds, ask a LOT of questions, and enjoy learning more about the world around them.

As a child who tends to favour the fantasy and magic of fiction books, I was keen to discover whether a magazine could help increase her willingness to read nonfiction texts. I was keen to find a magazine for Erin that would help her increase her general knowledge without exposing her to content that was unsuitable or too complex for her to understand.

I was recently given the opportunity to review Brittanica Magazine – a non-fiction magazine for curious young minds aimed at children aged 7 – 14. Each magazine is packed full of facts, photos, quizzes, jokes and more to help encourage a love of reading, knowledge and learning.

Our experience of Britannica Magazine?

Who doesn’t love receiving their very own post? Britannica Magazine allows children to subscribe to their very own monthly magazine, delivered straight to their door. There are 10 editions per year, each with a different theme, as well as two bumper editions every July and December.

Britannica Magazine aims to help children become experts across a wide range of fascinating topics, from space and animals to inventions and every issue will cover a huge range of fascinating topics, for example: When will humans travel to Mars? What animals really rule the Earth? How many kilogrammes of poo are pooped by people every second?

Unlike some other children’s magazines, Britannica Magazine has a highly visual design, with lots of fantastic photography and small bite-size chunks of information which aren’t too overwhelming. This format allows children to dip in and out of the magazine at their leisure and continue reading when they have a few minutes. The bright and eye-catching design held her attention well and I found that Erin was keen to share with me some of the fascinating facts that she’d learned.

The magazine provides a really engaging way for children to share facts with family members and encourages reading together – ideal for more reluctant readers who may struggle to gain enthusiasm for fiction texts or blocks of text without pictures.

Britannica magazine aims to make children say WOW on every page – but that’s not just a marketing spiel – Erin genuinely did say WOW a lot – here are just a small selection of some of the truly fascinating facts she learned in this edition:

  • Did you know that the world’s shortest dog, Milly the Chihuahua is just 9.65cm tall?
  • Engineers at a US university have developed the smallest ever remote-controlled robot – just half a mm wide!
  • A typical lightning bolt is 2-3cm wide – roughly the width of a grown-up’s thumb!

At one point, my eldest sat down completely unprompted and started reading the Britannica Magazine with my 5-year-old – to the point where Neve spent the rest of the afternoon walking around saying the word Megalodon! 😀

The July puzzles special is also jam packed full of fun mind games, optical illusions and puzzles such as quizzes, spot the differences, word searches and a Where’s Wally style treasure hunt.

The optical illusion on the cover actually looks like the middle circle is rotating – really clever!
