Have you heard of a coverless duvet before?
Like many busy parents, there are certain household jobs that I absolutely despise. With the exception of putting clothes away (which seem to sit around in piles for days before someone actually moves them), the household chore I hate the most, without a doubt, is changing the bedding. With a king-size bed, not only do I find myself grappling around like Mr Tickle attempting to hold and stretch my arms wide enough to catch all four corners of a king-sized duvet but then flap it around repeatedly only to pretty much have to climb inside to get the duvet evenly spread on the inside. It’s exhausting.
With Christmas around the corner, we were recently given the opportunity to test out a festive Night Lark Coverless Duvet. Previously known as Night Owl, they’re known to be one of the best coverless duvets on the market in the UK, I was quite excited to put them to the sleep test. Here’s our honest Night Lark Coverless duvet review, featuring a king-size coverless duvet from Fine Bedding Co.
What is a coverless duvet?
The clues are in the name here, but unlike a traditional duvet, a coverless duvet doesn’t need a separate duvet cover. As a result, there is no need to buy separate bed linen as the cover is permanently attached. A coverless duvet can save both storage space and money, with no need to buy or store additional bedding.
What are the advantages of a coverless duvet?
As well as saving storage space and reducing the amount of money spent on duvet covers and bedding, coverless duvets are also a cleaner and potentially a more hygienic option compared to a traditional duvet, as the entire duvet can be cleaned in the washing machine.
What are the disadvantages of a coverless duvet?
The most obvious disadvantage of a coverlesss duvet is the fact it’s obviously fixed in colour and design, meaning once you’ve chosen your colour scheme, its a little harder to mix it up or completely change the aesthetic of your room without buying a new one. That said, most coverless duvets in the UK come in neutral shades such as grey, white, pale blue or pink, meaning that they are fairly easy to match or complement most room settings.
With festive designs like this one, you may want to pack them away come January, but thanks to the included drawstring bag, it’s easy to store in your ottoman bed or vacuum pack until winter comes around again.
Coverless duvets are perhaps also not ideal for those who are prone to being a little clumsy. Where as you can remove a duvet cover and wash it if you spill a drink or accidentally drop make up on it, the entire coverless duvet would need to be put into the machine. Whilst they’re simple to wash and dry quickly, this could be more of an inconvenience than simply replacing a traditional duvet with another clean cover.
How do you wash a coverless duvet?
Unlike a traditional duvet, the entire Night Lark Coverless duvet can fit into any large-capacity washing machine and be washed with your normal laundry detergent. Even better it can dry in a well-ventilated room or on an airer within 90 minutes – meaning you can get it fresh, clean and back on your bed in no time.

Our Night Lark Coverless Duvet Review
First Impressions
The Night Lark Coverless Duvet comes in its own reuseable duffle/drawstring bag – ideal for sleepovers and travel. By far the best part is that you can have it out of the bag and on your bed in seconds – ready for a cosy and comfortable night’s sleep. Our first impressions of the Night Lark coverless duvet were very positive, converting my bedroom into a cosy winter themed setting in seconds. The duvet felt super lightweight and soft to the touch with an almost silky feel, which gives it a touch of luxury. Theres also a subtle wave pattern throughout that ensures equal distribution of the filling.
The Night Lark Coverless Duvet also comes with 2 pillowcases complimenting pillowcases (in white). Getting the bed ready was simple and fuss free – just throw it on the bed with no hassle and no grappling with a cover.

What is the Night Lark Coverless Duvet made from?
Outer – 100% soft microfibre
Filling – 100% smartfil polyester made from recycled PET bottles
Sustainable materials
Sensitive skin hypoallergenic
How warm is the Night Lark Coverless Duvet?
I love being cosy but not overheating during the night, so we opted for the 10.5 tog duvet, which is suitable for use all year round. I have never felt too warm or uncomfortable with the coverless duvet, in fact, it’s temperature regulating, meaning that even during perimenopause, I haven’t woken up feeeling sweaty or hot.

Washing the Night Lark Coverless Duvet
The Night Lark Coverless Duvet can be washed in most large-capacity washing machines, so it’s worth noting the size of your washing machine before you buy. Our machine coped absolutely fine with the king-sized duvet, but those with a smaller-sized drum on their washing machines may struggle
We washed the duvet in our machine at 40 degrees and it is suitable for tumble drying but we don’t currently have one. Instead, we air dryed ours using our Brabantia washing line. With the underfloor heating on in our kitchen, this dried really quickly – in just over 2 hours which I was super impressed with. I did like to pop onto a radiator to ensure it felt warm to the touch before popping it back on the bed. If you do have the option of using a tumble dryer – it’s even quicker – around 90 minutes.

I found the Night Lark Coverless duvet very easy to care for. Thanks to the wave pattern, the filling stays evenly distributed, so there was no flapping around required and it doesn’t lose its shape. I found it to be very durable, and it washes well without bobbling.
Are coverless duvets worth it?
So far, we’re fairly sold on the Night Lark Coverless duvet. My only criticism so far is that the pillowcases are a little ‘slippy’ and sometimes the flap doesn’t stay in place on the pillow. All things said, though, that is a very minor critique of the coverless duvet set. I love the ease of making the bed, the saved money on bed linen and the simplicity of cleaning it as and when required. Fair to say I’m a coverless duvet convert.
