Philips Hue Twilight Sleep Smart and Wake Up Lamp Review

This is a collaborative post. Philips Hue Twilight gifted for review
Sleep deprived, anxious and perimenopausal – can the Philips Hue Twilight Sleep Smart and Wake Up Lamp overhaul my bedtime routine and help me wake up feeling more energised? I put it through it’s paces to find out!
It’s fair to say that as a family, we’ve really bought into Philips Hue and the power of the Philips Hue Bridge – controlling a wide range of smart lighting in our home. Having used the Philips Hue Play Gradient Light Tube in our garden room for a few years now, it’s definitely taken our family movie nights and Saturday night Gladiators viewing to the next level.
This time, I’m testing Philips Hue’s bedroom white and colour ambience light – Twilight. As a premimenopausal Mum of two, getting a good night’s sleep and waking up full of energy has felt like a thing of the past. There’s nothing worse than getting jolted awake by the shrill of an alarm. so I was keen to put this wake up lamp to the test.
What is the Philips Hue Twilight Sleep Smart and Wake Up Lamp?
Available in a choice of two colours, the Philips Hue Twilight Sleep Smart and Wake Up Lamp not only looks great. It has dual lights, including an adjustable down light and upright colour-casting lights to the rear. The Twilight Lamp is designed to help you feel more recharged throughout the day, using science-backed scenes that can boost your mood – ideal for dark, gloomy days.

How I tested the Philips Hue Twilight Sleep Smart and Wake Up Lamp
The Philips Hue Twilight lamp has sat with pride of place on my bedside table for the last three weeks. Snuggling down with the reading setting with my Kindle before bed as well as for ambient room lighting while watching my favourite TV shows.
During testing, I explored the full range of settings including operating via Amazon Alexa, testing the wake-up alarm features and exploring the wide range of scene galleries. I also added scenes to my favourites and mastered operating the Twilight lamp via the Hue app.
First impressions of the Philips Hue Twilight
My first impressions of the Philips Hue Twilight lamp were really positive. A modern design with a slightly UFO-esque vibe, the lamp is available in white and black colour ways. We tested the white, which blended in well with my bedroom’s colour scheme.
The Twilght lamp sits just over 30cm tall, with a small footprint that sat neatly on my bedside table. I love the cork trim around the base, as well as the weighted base which prevents it from getting knocked over.
The Twilight lamp has dual lights – including a front down light (with a head that can be manually swivelled) and three independent lights to the rear. All of the lights can be controlled via the HUE app, or turned on and off using the buttons on the top.
One thing that did surprise me was the size of the adjustable power charger. While I loved that it included a range of adapters for travel, it’s really quite chunky. The plug was so substantial that I had to use an extension lead as it wouldn’t fit behind my bed. For the price, I would have liked to have seen a USB charger or something a little more discreet.

How easy is the Philips Hue Twilight to operate?
While the buttons on the top are handy for setting shortcuts and favourites, the easiest way to operate the light is via the Hue app or Amazon alexa. After syncing with Alexa, I was able to simply say “Alexa, turn on Twilight’ and it pinged to life instantly.
The app is really intuitive, selecting from the range of scene settings and setting the routines (alarm).
I was super impressed with the range of colour settings on this lamp – from the vivid colours of ‘Malibu pink’ to the romantic tones of ‘smitten’. I also enjoyed switching it to rest mode for relaxing before bed or a really dim nightlide mode for a more subtle glow. Most importantly – the light settings omit blue light, which suppresses melatonin – conducive to a good night’s sleep!

Have I woken up more refreshed?
So the $100 question – has the Philips Hue Twilight helped me wake up feeling more refreshed? – Yet to be determined. It’s early days and I’m not expecting miracles. That said, there is something really lovely about being woken up without an audible alarm. By setting my desired wake up ti,e in the app, my Twilight light can be set to fade up in brighness over a 10, 20 or 30-minute period. Mimicking sunrise, it certainly feels like a less brutal wake-up than the shrill alarm on my iPhone. I will keep using this feature and for me, it’s one of my favourite features of the lamp.
Pros: What we love about Philips Hue Twilight
- Modern, stylish design in choice of two colours
- Huge range of light options including front and back lights
- Compatible with Alexa
- Specific options for reading, focusing and relaxing
- Can set alarms that increase brightness over 20 minute period for more gradual wake up.
Cons: What would we change about Philips Hue Twilight?
- Chunky power adapter – would be great to see more discreet USB charging as the plug is tricky to fit behind tight spaces
- Costly – quite an investment, especially if you want to use full range of features with Bridg
