It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of Philips Hue in this house. With a large cinema screen in our garden room and hosting regular family movie nights, we love the impact of these smart lighting products, capable of completely overhauling our viewing experience.
If you’ve seen my previous posts, you’ll know that the Philips Hue Gradiant Light Tube was a huge success, syncing to our movies to add huge pops of colour to our space. We’ve also highly rated the Philips Hue Twilight, which, despite its annoyingly large plug, has completely transformed the lighting in my bedroom for reading, relaxing, and gentle wake-ups.
When we heard about the new Philips Hue Wall Washers, we were keen to put them to the test in our living room, adding some colour to our every day TV viewing – whether that’s for family movie nights, or me binging the latest series such as Love is Blind UK, Wednesday and The Summer I Turned Pretty (guilty as charged).

What are the Philips Hue Wall Washers?
Philips Hue Wall Washers are designed to create ambient lighting in your living room or bedroom, washing your wall with gradients of colour.
The Wall Washers are available as singles or pairs. Each compact and stylish light measuring 15.7cm tall and just over 9cm wide, with three vertical LED lights to the rear. Unlike standard lighting, the Philips Hue Wall Washers can be used to create gradients of light and colour, sysncing to a Hue Bridge and Sync app to respond to the colours on screen.
Our Philips Hue Wall Washers review – How easy are they to set up and use?
Having already used several Philips Hue products, we found the Wall Washers quick and easy to set up.
We tested the set of two, and its important to think about positioning. Ideally you want them positioned behind your TV screen and close (but not too close!) to your walls, allowing a ‘wash’ of colour to project into your surroundings. We found the effects most impressive when the lights were positioned around 10-15cm away from the wall.
Adding a new device to our Hue app was easy, simply pairing it via a QR code – this was super fast to do – even for a technophobe like myself!
As with many Hue products, you can then select colours via a library of pre configured modes on the app, or if you have the sync box, enable the responsive lighting that will adapt to your screen.
How impressive were the Philips Hue Wall Washers’ effects?
Very. As you can see in the photos below, having a wash of complementary colours behind your TV creates a bold, cinematic effect.
I loved using them with the sync app, however if you don’t have this, the suite of colour options are equally impressive and a great way to set the mood.

Overall verdict – Our Philips Hue Wall Washers Review
Overall, if you’re prepared to pay a premium for ambient lighting, you won’t be disappointed with the Philips Hue Wall Washers. The lights are stylish and compact, and the washes of colour are truly beautiful – especially on dark nights when you’re snuggled up on the sofa. My only major bug bear apart from the cost is the ginormous plug socket. This seems to be a common theme amongst Hue products, which given the high spec of the products seems a bit of a mismatch.
