Race with Ryan Road Trip Deluxe Edition REVIEW
*AD – This post is in collaboration with Outright Games
The girls are big fans of Ryan’s World – having been obsessed with watching his YouTube channel for some time. It started with unboxing videos and surprises, before expanding into surprise eggs toys and collectibles, and more recently in 2019, the release of his first ever Race with Ryan game, which we reviewed last year on the PS4.
The girls were big fans of the original Race with Ryan game, however one of my only real criticisms was the fact that there weren’t enough levels, and I worried that the girls would ‘complete’ them or get too comfortable with the available levels too quickly. It appears my wishes have been answered because in 2020, Race with Ryan is back with a NEW Road Trip Deluxe edition; packed with 4 new all-American themed race tracks, and 12 USA themed drivers.
The girls were really looking forward to testing out Race with Ryan Road Trip Deluxe Edition, and this time we trialed it on the Nintendo Switch. You can see the launch trailer for Race with Ryan Deluxe Edition below.
Product Description – Race with Ryan Road Trip Deluxe Edition
Race with Ryan is back, but this time with more tracks, more friends and more fun – making it the complete racing experience for fans of YouTube sensation Ryan’s World!
As per its predecessor, Race with Ryan Road Trip Deluxe Edition is a multi car kart racing game aimed at children aged 3-6 years but suitable for the whole family to enjoy and play together. The game retails at £29.99 and is available at Smyths Toys on PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC.
With a strong Mario Kart vibe; whisking me straight back to the days of my youth, children can select their character from lots of traditional Race with Ryan characters such as Policeman Ryan, Red Titan, Gus and Pirate Combo as well as any of the 12 NEW USA themed Drivers including American Titan, Kansas Gus, New York Lexa, Montana Panda and many more. When selecting the character you get to see a little 360 view of the character an their vehicle before confirming your choice.
In the original Race with Ryan there were 6 levels or zones to explore and at the time, I felt that this wasn’t quite enough. The Race with Ryan Deluxe Edition comes with four brand new American themed zones including Route 66, Icy Land, Redwood Forest and The Big Apple.
All the levels can be played forwards and in reverse, which means in theory that there are 20 unique experiences to play within the new edition.
There are a number of different modes of play from Single Player to Split Screen and you can choose to simply play a quick race, or enter career mode where you complete a number of races and progress up a leaderboard. With split screen mode, between two and four players can play and compete together.
Each player can specify the level of difficulty they want to work to, which is really helpful when playing with the family together – parents can choose the hard difficulty level where as younger players or those less confident with the tech can use the easy mode. There is also an assisted steering and automatic gas mode for younger players which means they can enjoy the experience of playing along even if they are too small to fully master the controls. Neve is four, and we found that we didn’t need to use these although at times she did forget to use the special powers as she was too busy concentrating on steering and avoiding obstacles!
The Aim of the Game
We were really impressed with the new zones in the Race with Ryan Deluxe edition. They are all really detailed with an Authentic American feel and have an almost 3D effect so you feel like you are fully emersed in the world around you as you race.
The aim is simple – to race and beat your opponents to the finish line. Even in single player mode there are lots of other players to compete with. As you race to the finish line you must avoid obstacles, navigate and steer around your landscape and collect surprise eggs, each of which contain super powers or tools you can use to either enhance your speed or performance or trap and trick your opponents. These super powers include burger shields, sticky slime and even trick surprise eggs which explode when driven in to – all of which can slow down the other players and give yourself a better chance of taking the top position on the leaderboard. Watch our for your opponents tricks too however – you must also avoid getting squished by giant balls or opponents attacks.
Each round has 3 laps, and you can clearly see what position you are in the race at all times.
During game play, Ryan regularly pops up from the bottom right hand corner to either celebrate, encourage or sympathise if you have been hit by an opponents attack (as seen in the photo above). For parents, this may be a little bit annoying, but the girls love Ryan and are used to his cheeky mannerisms so they actually found this really funny.
Overall – the new version is just as much fun as the original only with LOADS of new characters and zones to explore. A big hit with the girls and something that would be great fun to play as a family this Christmas!
Our Race with Ryan Party
To celebrate the new Race with Ryan Deluxe edition we had a mini Race with Ryan party at our house which was loads of fun and Neve was very excited! Not only did we get to put the new game through its paces but created our own mini race game too using small cars, seeing who could be the first to push their mini car over the finish line!
We were also lucky enough to be able to unbox the new Ryan’s World Combo Panda Mystery Vehicle Playset – a giant panda head packed full of fun surprises to unbox and reveal.
Not only was the Combo Panda Mystery Playset filled with 20+ surprises including mini vehicles, a stamp set and Ryan figure, but it also involved some mystery solving too, using 3D glasses to reveal the code, and cracking the safe to expose the surprise boxes contained within. It even involved scratching away new codes with a magic coin, revealing the next clue and completing the unboxing challenge in true Ryan’s World style!
Neve really loved unboxing all the pieces and building them together to create her mini Race with Ryan character on a motorbike. A really fun addition for Ryan’s World fans – the Combo Panda Mystery Playset retails at £34.99 and is also available to buy at Smyths Toys now.
