It’s no secret that we are HUGE Harry Potter fans in this house. From growing up with the books as a child myself, to enjoying the series with my two daughters, we have amassed quite the collection of Harry Potter toys and merchandise, including a range of Harry Potter LEGO sets such as the LEGO Hogwarts Great Hall (75954), The LEGO Harry Potter Knight Bus (75957) and of course, LEGO Hedwig (75979).

What started as a small selection of Harry Potter LEGO has grown to become a huge range of Harry Potter LEGO Sets, now including iconic scenes such as Grimmauld Place, Ministry of Magic and even the Whomping Willow.

The good news for Potterheads and die hard Harry Potter fanatics is that there are loads of new Harry Potter LEGO sets that have been released or are coming soon in 2023. From small LEGO Harry Potter sets, to poseable sets, large sets, display sets or even sets that will keep your building all weekend, we’ve rounded up the very best of the Harry Potter LEGO sets for 2023, outlining all the details you need to know, as well as the pros and cons of each set. Best Overall Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023: Dobby the House Elf

Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023 - Dobby The House Elf

Key Specs: RRP: £24.99 | Suitable for: Ages 8+ | Number of pieces: 403 | Item no. 76421

It’s not hard to see why Dobby takes the top spot for our favourite Harry Potter LEGO set 2023. LEGO’s first-ever Dobby LEGO model, this new addition to the Harry Potter LEGO range is sure to prove popular with the biggest Potter fans. With adorable moon eyes and a welcoming smile, this super cute Dobby (with stand) comes with iconic accessories including a floating cake, Tom Riddle’s diary and an elves’ favourite gift – a sock! The scene with the cake in the Dursely’s house has to be one of our favourite HP moments!

The LEGO Dobby has a fully poseable head, arms and fingers, allowing him to hold the accessories firmly in his grip.  Measuring 7.5 inches (around 19cm) tall, he’s designed to be displayed in your child’s bedroom, on their desk or in a Harry Potter LEGO shrine, with a stand and nameplate included.

Whilst a relatively quick build, we love the attention to detail on this set, from Dobby’s nobbly knees and big green eyes to the sentimental little LEGO heart in his chest. He’s also reasonably affordable too, especially when compared to some of the larger Harry Potter LEGO sets such as the LEGO Hogwarts Castle and Grounds set below.

Pros

  • The heart inside Dobby’s chest makes a really adorable addition
  • Comes with accessories – including the famous free Elf sock
  • Fully articulated limbs
  • Affordable compared to larger LEGO Harry Potter builds

Cons:

  • Relatively quick build

Best Harry Potter LEGO Set with Mini Figures 2023: Diagon Alley Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes

Key Specs: £84.99: | Suitable for: 8+ | Number of pieces: 834 | Item no. 76422

Diagon Alley has become a pretty iconic part of the Harry Potter series and if you’re lucky enough to have taken a trip to the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studios; chances are you’ll have taken a photo outside of the Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes shop!

Not to be confused with the original 75978 Diagon Alley set, this new edition double-sided playset is two Diagon Alley shops in one – The Weasleys Joke Shop and The Owl Post. The two units can be slotted together, making a great set for 360-degree play. Measuring over 21 cm (8.5 in.) high and with two stories inside, this set has great attention to detail – ideal for children who love to build and then play with their creations.

The joke shop includes the Weasley Twins’ most memorable products including the famous Puking Pastilles, Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder, Nosebleed Nougat and lots of other stock filling the shelves in large boxes. Whilst there are no stairs to get between floors, there is plenty of space inside for acting out key moments from the books and movies.

There is also an owl post shoot, where children can drop letters into the post and watch as they click clack their way down into the shop below. We do feel like there was a missed opportunity with this set, however, as we would have loved to have seen some movement such as the raising of the hat on the building with a turning handle or switch like there was in the previous Diagon Alley set. That said, there are seven mini-figures included which for the price is a very welcomed addition.

Pros:

  • Includes 7 LEGO minifigures, an owl figure and lots of accessories
  • Full owl post shoot which attaches to the Weasley’s shop building
  • Double-sided play
  • Good size at over 21cm tall

Cons

  • Not as ‘wonky’ as the original shop
  • Children may need assistance with some of the stickers – particularly those with writing (there are a LOT!)
  • Some ‘movement’ would have enhanced the set

Best 2-in-1 Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023: Expecto Patronum

Best Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023 - Expecto Patronus

Key Specs: RRP: £62.99 | Suitable for:14+ | Number of pieces: 754| Item no.76414

If you like to get your money’s worth, you’ll love this LEGO Expecto Patronum build and display set, which features two unique builds in one box. Just like the LEGO Creator sets, children can choose from Harry Potter’s Stag Patronus or the wolf patronus of Professor Lupin. A great piece to display in their rooms, they can build one, display for a while and then mix things up by taking it apart and rebuilding the alternative design.

The set comes with both Harry and Lupin mini figures each with a glowing wand accessory. We love the ghostly translucent blue bricks which look awesomely spooky when they catch the light. With poseable legs, there’s also an element of movement too despite the display stand.

The downside, we’re not convinced your kids will want to take the set apart once they’ve completed the first, so whilst the set offers two builds, your child may end up sticking with one.

Pros

  • A relatively simple build
  • 2 designs in one set
  • Striking pieces to display, especially in dimmed light

Cons:

  • The horns on the stag can fall off easily when moving the set.
  • Child may end up sticking with one design after completing their build

Best Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023 for role play: The Battle of Hogwarts

Key Specs: RRP:£74.99 | Suitable for: 9+ | Number of pieces:730 | Item no. 76415

If your child enjoys not only building their Harry Potter LEGO but also recreating the scenes from the movies, they will love this Battle of Hogwarts playset (from part 2 of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows).

Designed to break apart during battle play (unlike some of the sets which can break up by accident!) the elements of the castle can be moved around and reassembled to switch between a bridge and courtyard scene, or even combined with other modular LEGO Harry Potter sets to create a larger playset. Measuring over 11 in. (28 cm) high, 17.5 in. (44 cm) wide and 4.5 in. (11 cm) deep, it’s also a great LEGO Harry Potter set for role play in it’s own right.

We love the ‘rays of light’ that spring out of Harry and Voldemort’s wand fight, whilst children will love using the Sword of Gryffindor to destroy Nagini. There are six mini figures included and as always, the attention to detail is fantastic, with characters instantly recognisable.

Pros

  • Designed to be broken apart during battles
  • Includes six mini figures including Harry Potter, Voldemort and Neville Longbottom
  • Fun spell-casting effect encourages imaginative play

Cons

  • Some characters are duplicated from other sets
  • Some of the other sets at a similar price point offer more interactivity

Best large Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023: Hogwarts Express Train Set

Key Specs: RRP: £114.99 | Suitable for: 8+| Number of pieces:1074 | Item no. 76423

Looking for an iconic Harry Potter LEGO Set that will keep your children aged 8+ content for hours? They don’t come much more recognisable than the Hogwarts Express.

This newly released Hogwarts Express and Hogsmeade Station set includes a incredibly lifelike, moveable engine, with a coal car, two passenger characters and even the confectionary trolley and Trolley Witch. With lollies and even Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans to choose from – they really haven’t missed a trick with this set.

The train can be driven on the included tracks, or switches to off track mode for wheeling around on a hard floor (best suited to wooden floors or tiles). We love that the roof and side of the carriage can be lifted off to securely seat the Harry Potter mini fugres, whilst the addition of the authentic ticket office with Owl post, bathroom and platform helps create a full station scene.

There are eight mini figures in the set, so children can recreate conversations between Ron, Harry and Hermione, or even help Hagrid present Harry with the family photo album.

Pros

  • This set is the first LEGO Harry Potter set to include Lee Jordan
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Substantial build and size – measuring over 3 in. (8 cm) high, 23 in. (59 cm) long and 2 in. (6 cm) wide

Cons

  • A couple of more track pieces in the set would have been good considering the price

Best small Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023: Quidditch Trunk

Key Specs: RRP: £62.99| Suitable for: 9+ | Number of pieces: 599 | Item no. 76416

When I think about Quidditch, I still find it relatively mind-blowing that JK Rowling created a whole new sport in an imaginary world that actually has a role book and scoring method. I wish I could be that creative. Now thanks to this new Quidditch Trunk, children can carry along the fun with them in this portable Harry Potter LEGO set.

Kids will love to build this Quidditch Trunk Toy set which converts from a realistic-looking treasure trunk, folding out to reveal the Quidditch playing field with house banners, players and everything children need to act out a scene from a match. We love the real ‘3D” effect of the hoops and the ability to fire bludgers, defend goals and even attempt to catch the golden snitch.

By far the best part of this set is the addition of an additional 10 heads (with a variety of skin tones, hairstyles and double-sided expressions). This allows children to combine the set with other mini-figures to add crowds, additional players and much more. You also get four deluxe mini figures including Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy, Cedric Diggory and Cho Chang, each wearing their Quidditch House Cape. Siblings can have great fun with this playset (although it could’ve done with being a bit bigger to actually play the games effectively) but its small size makes it great for stashing away (most of) the pieces when it’s not in use.

Pros

  • Authentic accessories including the Golden Snitch, Quaffle, broomsticks, bludgers and even a trophy
  • Includes house banners
  • 10 additional heads with variety of expressions and skin tones
  • Portable play set

Cons

  • Whilst compact size is ideal for travel, In our opinion its too small for realistic interactive play
  • Not all the pieces fit inside the chest (goal posts clip on to the sides), so there is a genuine risk of pieces getting lost
  • High RRP for the size.

Best Luxury Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023: Hogwarts Castle and Grounds

Best Harry Potter LEGO Set 2023 - Hogwarts Castle and Grounds

Key Specs: RRP: £149.99 | Suitable for:18+ | Number of pieces: 2660| Item no. 76419

Whilst it doesn’t come cheap, if you’re after a lifelike, iconic LEGO Set to display in your home, the LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Castle and Grounds makes a great luxury choice. A smaller, more compact version of the original Hogwarts Castle set (71043), this set comes with a much more affordable price tag,

Incredibly detailed with 360 degrees of recognisable elenents, the set includes the Main Tower, Astronomy Tower, Great Hall and Boathouse, courtyards, greenhouses, paths and bridges, all on the familiar rocky landscape and Black Lake. You’ll even find the Chamber of Secrets and the Weasley’s Ford Anglia caught in the branches of the Whomping Willow.

We love the base plate which creates the illusion of water and the curved turrets of the castle tower. The set even includes the Golden mini figure of the Hogwarts Architect – a great collector piece.

Whilst this set is perhaps less suited to ‘playing’ I think it will appeal to Harry Potter fans young and old due its perfectly scaled, all round detailed design.

Pros

  • More affordable than the original 71043 Hogwarts Castle design
  • Incorporates ‘grounds’ elements including Burmstrang ship and Beauxbatons carriage
  • 2660 pieces can be built over a number of days

Cons:

  • Hard to say until the launch in September 2023, but worth noting that there are only small sections of the inside visible in this set (it doesn’t fully open up for creative play.
  • More suited for display purposes.
