Stop Being Fearful at 40! Basic Health Checks That Make All the Difference
This is a collaborative post
Rather than becoming fearful of 40, it’s vital to remember that this is where life begins! But it’s also an invitation to check in with yourself, because life after 40 involves juggling so much more in terms of family, work, and, more importantly, rest, which often leaves very little time for your personal health, but the truth is, those small preventative checks can make a huge difference in how you feel and function every single day. Those little symptoms we brush off as we get older do have simple solutions if we catch them early on, so let’s show you a few things to be aware of:
Keeping Your Hearing Sharp
You may very well have noticed gradual hearing loss or a lingering feeling of blocked ears, and if it starts to affect your focus or daily conversations, this is where you can remove wax build-up through practices such as ear microsuction, which comes without the discomfort of syringes. Clear hearing is critical, of course, but it’s not just about hearing every single word your kids are muttering, but it also improves your balance, attention, and overall well-being.
Blood Pressure and Heart Health
High blood pressure is a silent condition, and it goes unnoticed more often than not until it starts to cause fatigue, headaches, or more serious problems, but regular checks through your GP or home monitor can help you spot changes early on. Heart health also benefits from monitoring your glucose and cholesterol levels, but also, of course, those simple things that make a big difference to your life, for example, staying active, eating heart-friendly foods, and, more importantly than ever these days, managing stress. We have to remember that prevention is far easier than a cure!
Routine Blood Tests and Hormone Checks
After 40, our hormone balance can start to shift, from our thyroid levels to perimenopausal changes, even subtle imbalances can affect our mood, energy, and weight, which is where routine blood tests can reveal things like low iron, thyroid dysfunction, or even vitamin D deficiency, which are all extremely common among women in mid-life. Spotting any deficiencies early on means you can tweak your diet, lifestyle, or supplementation before symptoms turn into burnout or depression.
Gut Health and Nutritional Balance
As we get older, we can experience a more sluggish metabolism, so reviewing our diet and discussing digestive symptoms with our GP can make a big difference. Sometimes the smaller changes, like increasing our fibre intake or having more probiotics, can ease discomfort and support nutrient absorption. Gut health is still a relatively new phenomenon being discussed; however, a healthy gut extends to our mood, our immunity, and even our skin. Therefore, investing some time in understanding how your diet is affecting your energy levels is about self-care rather than indulgence. We also need to remember that gradual improvements can build the strongest results, meaning we don’t need to overhaul our diet overnight!
Good health starts with open conversations about our health concerns, and if we ever notice unusual symptoms, we should take that as a reminder to seek advice!
