Valentine’s – Is Romance Dead?
In just 3 weeks time, the biggest event in February’s social calendar will be upon us…. The day that all the singletons dread, and those in the ‘honeymoon period’ gloat about… but what about the rest of us? For those in long term relationships, and with one or more little bundles at home, has Valentine’s Day ran it’s course?
I have never been a huge fan of Valentine’s Day, regardless of my relationship status.
As a child, I remember me and a friend working together to create the illusion of being popular. We would both buy each other a card and chocolate treat, and sneakily leave it in each others school drawer. We then got the joy of acting surprised about our secret admirers, whilst the rest of the class were non the wiser.
When I was single, and in my late teens and early twenties, I used to hope with anticipation, that one year, just once, I would wake to see a card on my doormat. I would jest that the postman would be struggling with the weight of all the cards and gifts he had to carry, but no, the cards and gifts never came.
When I met the person I considered to be ‘the one’ I thought I’d hit the jackpot. FINALLY! I thought, I can look FORWARD to Valentine’s Day! I am not materialistic, so wouldn’t expect a gift, but I could pretty much guarantee a card or a meal out right? WRONG!!!
In the 5 years I have been with Mike I have NEVER received a Valentines’ Day card- not once! Even though I have bought him one every year! Even after bringing his two daughters into the world!! We never go out on Valentine’s Day because a) we can’t find a babysitter and b) I hate how busy it is on the night itself. For us, Valentine’s Day is normally spent at home, and if I am lucky we will snuggle down and watch a movie on the sofa.
I sound bitter, but in fact I personally think that you don’t need to have a particular day a year to show someone that you love them – and actually I would rather the money was spent on a family activity than a tacky card or gift. That said, it’s still fun to dress up your little ones in cute Valentines montages!! Ha ha!
We’ve never really done Valentine’s Day here but I don’t mind at all
Lol I think the day is what you make it, some people just aren’t romantic lol
I used to love valentines day, I would make my dad a handmade card each year until I stopped at 23. I received my first ever (non family/friend related) card from a “secret admirer” when I was 14, I was soo embarrassed! Our school used to sell single roses and my friend and I used to buy each other one, we stopped when she received loads!
Hubby has always been great for valentines but we recently decided we were no longer spending money on cards or gifts so we had to be more thoughtful, last year he made me a flower using a straw and those packing peenuts you get in fragile deliveries.
We never really go out for Valentine’s Day either! I’d much prefer a nice meal in and a movie too. It won’t stop me dressing the kids up though haha xx
I hate Valentines Day – can’t help but think it’s simply a massive money grabbing ‘holiday’ too benefit consumers (scrooge of love day over here…) – lovely pictures though! xo
I do think Valentines is dying out, I feel it’s more marketed to the newly dating. However we are going to try to celebrate it because in essence its a day for love
I personally don’t mind valentines day. I agree that you don’t need a specific day to show your partner you love them but I think it’s nice to make a little effort especially as life can be so busy. We don’t do huge extravagant gifts but always get each other a card and my husband will always buy flowers. We tend to stay in and just cook a nice meal at home. xxx
