What to Look for When Looking for a Parkinson’s Care Home

*This is a collaborative post

Looking into a care home for your loved one, especially if it’s your parent, can be tough. You want to make sure that they’ll be completely comfortable and safe wherever they are. You’re going to want to ensure that their needs are tailored to, that all the other residents are happy, and more importantly, that your aging loved one is going to get the best possible care.

A good Parkinson’s care home provides a variety of services and amenities that are tailored to the needs of its residents. Important considerations include the location, size, and facilities available. Since there are certain expectations that have to be met, what else should be looked into before putting your loved one into a home? How can you find help? Keep reading to learn more.

What are the benefits of a care facility?

Chances are, it’s getting to a point that you and your family may be struggling to take care of your aging loved one, right? This is a common occurrence that happens in most families and the usual solution is to either hire a caretaker or to put your aging loved one with Parkinson’s into a senior care facility. While there are more than enough jokes and stereotypes about these, it’s important to know that these facilities are meant to help your loved one and they still allow them to have freedom. Some of the potential benefits your loved one can have could include:

  • An increase in social activities
  • Making new friends
  • Doing fun activities from puzzles, trips, crafts, and so much more
  • An accessible environment
  • Freedom
  • 24/7 available staff
  • On-site doctors
  • Opportunities for on-site medical professionals to step in and help at any given time

These are only some of the great benefits that residents get when moving into a facility.

Things you should be watching out for during your interview with the potential caregivers and facilities

When you’re looking into a Parkinson’s care home, it’s important to not be afraid to ask questions. If your aging loved one has questions, allow them to ask. Interviewing these care facilities is perfectly normal, in fact, they’re expected. When you are interviewing potential caregivers, there are some things that you should be aware of. These include:

  • The qualifications and experience of some of the caregivers
  • Amenities that the care home provides
  • The caregiver’s personality and ability to work with others
  • How the caregiver will work with your loved one’s needs

Even if you’ve seen negative reviews somewhere online, ask them about it and how they handle those sorts of things. Never be afraid to ask questions, since this may be the facility that is going to care for your loved one.

Is it right for your loved one?

Only your aging loved one can truly answer this. If their Parkinson’s disease is mild, then maybe it’s something that could be pushed off a bit longer. It’s important that your loved one spends their golden years somewhere that will make them very happy so above all else, when you’re looking for a facility for those with Parkinson’s disease, your loved one should get the final say.
