Handy Tips For Downsizing Your Home
This is a collaborative post
Moving home is always a complex and tricky business, not to mention costly. While there are plenty of tips you can follow to help make your move easier, you have to consider the particular circumstances of your move. For instance, if you’re moving into a home smaller than your current, for one reason or another, then it will take a little additional work. Here are a few tips that can make your move a little easier.
Start making room early
One of the most common tips for moving home is to start thinking about which items you really need or want to bring with you, and which you might be better off leaving behind. This is doubly true when you’re downsizing and you have less room for all of your possessions as they are. To that end, you should go through all of your items and whichever you’re not particularly enthusiastic about keeping, think about how you can sell it or, failing that, donate it or dispose of it as sustainably as possible.
Keep what you can’t get rid of
You might not be able to immediately get rid of all of the items that won’t fit into your new home. Perhaps you might find a way to make better use of them later. Or perhaps they’re valuable enough that you don’t want to rush a sale when you can get a better price for them. When that’s the case, self storage can be a very helpful option. A place to keep them, for the moment, and to secure them while you get settled in your new home.
Keep in mind the rooms you won’t have in your new home
It’s just that you will have less space, you might well have fewer rooms in total. This might mean that some rooms you rely on or use at the moment, you won’t be able to replicate in the new home. As such, you might want to think about how you can fit the utility of those rooms into a different room. This can include, for instance, setting up a home office space in the bedroom, since you no longer have a room for it. Compromises are going to have to be made, and it’s best to start planning them ahead of time.
Don’t buy for the new home
If you’re already downsizing, then you should be able to see the peril of acquiring too much. Now is the time to stop doing it. Avoid buying anything for the new home as much as possible. Of course, there are might be some essentials that are missing, or fixtures that you want to invest in, but when it comes to new decor items, just focus on bringing over what you can for now. You can always redecorate in the future.
Downsizing might be a little more difficult than the average, but that just means it takes a little more preparation than the usual move. Hopefully, the tips above can help you get through it without too much stress.
