#AD – This is a collaborative post

Do you have a dash cam in your car? It’s been something I have been thinking about for some time now, and despite being a very confident driver, I have been involved in accidents before – in one particular case where a driver ran a red light and drove into my front passenger side at speed. My car was quite seriously damaged, and thankfully there were witnesses on hand who saw what happened and could confirm who was at fault, but what if I’d have been on my own? If she had decided to not play fair, I would have had a real challenge proving liability.

There has been a rise in recent years of fake traffic accidents, otherwise known as ‘smash and claim’, where people intentionally drive into you or stop suddenly in order to claim whiplash injuries. Sadly in our local area, car jackings are also coming incredibly common place, with certain makes of cars being stolen to order and I have heard some terrifying stories of people being dragged from their vehicles or threatened with weapons.

Whilst I am very much of the view that if someone tried to take my car I’d let them have it so long as my family were safe, it pains me to think that someone can simply take something with no regard for the safety or pain they cause to the families they steal from.

More and more drivers are opting to have dash cams in their cars in recent years, with dash cam footage becoming fundamental in proving fault in accident claims and being passed over to police as evidence in dangerous driving incidents.

Why should you have a dash cam?

  • If you are in an accident and the driver leaves the scene, tries to deny responsibility, or you have an accident in a rural location with no witnesses, you don’t need to worry. The dash cam footage will record what actually happened and can be used as evidence.
  • Help you report dangerous drivers – we’ve all been behind that driver who tailgates, pulls out or drives aggressively or sadly looks like they are under the influence or are texting whilst driving. With dash cam footage, you can actually do something about it and report the drivers to ensure that the roads are kept safer for everyone.
  • Shared insurance – if you are a parent who lets your child borrow your car, or have your partner on your insurance, the presence of the dash cam recording footage every time the engine is turned on, might just ensure they drive a little more carefully with your pride and joy.
  • Documenting road trips – travelling with your family? Driving across Europe? Driving through glorious British countryside? Dash cams are a great way to record some live footage of your destination.
  • Finally, dash cams have been known to accidentally capture the unexpected (like the Russian car driver’s dash camera that captured a meteor that flew over Russia and went on to get millions of views on YouTube!). If something amazing happens, that footage could be absolutely priceless.
