I am far from being a domestic goddess, but there is something about Spring that makes me want to do a massive blitz of my house. I’m not sure if its the fact that the lighter days show off all the engrained Wotsit stains on the carpet, or the fact that the suns’ rays show off the layer of dust that glistens on my tv cabinet – either way, it’s a tad on the embarrassing side, and to the pleasure of my partner, I get a bit of a cleaning buzz when the sun starts to shine.

I recently came across the #ComeClean campaign by Seventh Generation, a US Brand who have recently launched in the UK, that are now available in most Tesco stores. They are questioning the ingredients that are included in traditional cleaning products and are campaigning to make it compulsory for all ingredients to be listed so that families can be fully aware of what they are putting into their homes. As someone who’s daughter has eczema and allergies, this is a really important message – I am always a little doubtful of how something bright blue or purple can be natural!

Straight forward Spring Cleaning however is, how can I put this… borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring. I like to mix it up a bit.

Here are my tips for making Spring Cleaning simple yet fun:

  1. Put some music on – it’s amazing how much more fun you can have cleaning when you boogie at the same time. I try and match the music to the task for extra comedy value (geek) – My personal favourites for cleaning include Another one Bites the Dust, Christina Aguilera’s Dirty, or if my daughter is helping, the Happy Working Song from Enchanted. (Ok, I admit it, I listen to that one even when she isn’t around!!)
  2. Get the kids involved – clearly this is dependent on their age, at 8 months Neve is more of a hindrance than a help and I’m not suggesting slave labour. My elder daughter loves to dust, and bizarrely finds it somewhat enjoyable. Give her a duster or a wipe to clean some surfaces with and she is a happy happy girl.
  3. Be the winner – When it comes to tidying up, getting a bit of competitive gave playing on the go always helps! Race to see who can get the lego back in the box the fastest – extra brownie points if you can avoid treading on any in the process.
  4. Listen to an audio book whilst you clean – If you are lucky enough to be able to clean whilst child free, you can pop on an audiobook or podcast whilst you clean- I tend to head off into my own little world and the time passes a LOT quicker.
  5. Think of the calories or steps – a spring clean is a great way of upping the steps on your fitness tracker – I have the activity app on my iWatch and always try and beat my daily target, even if it means running on the spot or doing a few extra laps of the bedroom before bed (My partner thinks I am nuts but I am competitive and it WILL NOT BEAT ME). Try and squat when you polish too – feel the burn! 🙂
  6. Clear out the stuff you no longer need and sell on Facebook groups / eBay / Gumtree – in the words of Will Farrell in Step Brothers, Think of all the “extra floor space for activites!!!”. The best part is that with the money you recoup from selling things, you can go and buy NEW things to fill the space you have created lol 🙂
  7. Donate some of your high quality unwanted stuff to charity, to do a good deed at the same time. Your unwanted items may be someone else’s treasure!
  8. New bed sheets. If I actually spent any time in my bed, this would be a real positive. There is nothing like the feeling of fresh crisps sheets.
  9. Offer a reward. To yourself. Finish the bathroom…. eat a hob nob. Clean and mop the kitchen… pour a glass of wine. You will be full and frazzled by the time the house is clean but it will be worth it! 🙂
  10. Plan a visitor – I don’t know about you but NOTHING gets my house a tidy as the imminent arrival of guests!
