Would you know how to protect your loved ones in the event of a fire at your family home?
The thought of a fire in our family home absolutely terrifies me. Whilst I like to think that should the worst happen I would know what I would do, the reality is that I would be more likely to panic, and as such, rational decision making could go right out the window!
New research from Firexo has found that a massive 67% of UK adults do not have a fire extinguisher in their home and 81% do not have one in their car, leaving them with no means of defending themselves or their property should they experience a fire. Their research is generally pretty shocking with statistics such as the following:
- Only 1 in 4 adults claim to know the right extinguisher to use on each different class of fire, despite potentially disastrous consequences if the wrong extinguishers are used or used incorrectly.
- Even more shockingly, a third do not even know how to operate a fire extinguisher at all!
- 4 out of 10 – that’s a huge 45% admit that they would choose to let someone else tackle the fire, mainly due to a concern that they would make the situation worse (I think I would fall into this camp!)
- Nearly 3/4 (71%) of adults do not know how to correctly put out an oil fire.
The part of the research that shocked me the most was that only 67% of adults have equipped their homes with the most basic of fire safety tools – a smoke detector. This is pretty shocking when you think that we are equipping our homes with smart technology like CCTV doorbells and smart heating systems, yet leaving our homes and our families safety exposed.
