Around 90% of the time, this is a household fuelled by caffeine. Whilst I am used to a bad nights sleep, and have pretty much accepted that with a child who doesn’t eat I am never going to sleep soundly again, Mike on the other hand, cannot handle a disturbed night. On the rare occasion that I do wake him up to help me (usually at about 2am when I am at the end of my tether, have work in the morning and haven’t yet closed my eyes), he really struggles the following day. The one thing that always manages to snap him out of it, usually before he utters the words I’m tired and get’s a sharp angry glare, is a good strong coffee.

He has always been a big fan of the Nespresso range, and now that we have a Nespresso store in Solihull (wooohoo), our old machine has been getting more use than ever, to the point that he thought he had almost killed it though over use. Our original machine has a separate milk frother, and as a result, usually due to limited time, it very rarely got bought out the cupboard, as he just wanted a quick and easy caffeine fix.

We were recently invited by AO.com to put their Nespresso by De’Longhi Lattissima One coffee machine to the test, and with its inbuilt milk single serve system, there was no excuses for him not being able to have the perfect cappuccino on the fly.

Our Experience

My first impressions of the Nespresso by De’Longhi Lattissima One EN500.BW were very positive. I love the mocha brown colour, and the space saving design of the product makes it small and compact, taking up minimal space on the counter top. Where as our previous Nespresso had the milk frother separately (requiring not one but two plugs!), the Nespresso by De’Longhi Lattissima One has both elements combined, taking up far less space, and making life just that little bit easier when you are desperate for your coffee fix!

The Nespresso by De’Longhi Lattissima One is super quick and easy to set up and use, and having used a Nespresso machine before, it didn’t take long at all for Mike to figure out how to get his perfect cuppa, with no requirement to sit and read through pages and pages of instructions. With only three buttons on the top, it’s pretty hard to get it wrong – simply insert your desired capsule into the lift up lid, and select from either espresso, lungo, and latte/cappuccino. The third option differentiates whether you’d like a latte or a cappuccino based on the amount of milk you put in the milk system attached.

The starter pack comes with 14 pods included, which I felt was a really nice touch – including 3 decaffeinated and with a range of different strengths. This is a fab way for someone who is new to Nespresso to figure out their favourite blends without needing to go out and incur additional expense.

Mike was really impressed with the Lattisima One’s single serve milk system. There are two markers on the milk jug, one for latte and one for cappuccino, clearly showing how much milk you need to add and ensuring no waste.

For a cappuccino, foamed milk is added first, where as for a latte, hot milk will come first, followed by foamed milk. The milk warmed up very quickly, and resulting in a perfectly layered drink.

As with most coffee machines of this nature, it can be a little on the noisy side (I always know when he’s woken up as I hear that familiar hum from the kitchen!), however it is very easy to clean, with parts easy to dismantle and even pop in to a dishwasher if you are so lucky.

Overall, we have been really impressed. After weekends like this one where Neve’s had a sickness bug – it has been a VERY welcome addition to our family.

Pros:

  • Very easy to set up and set to use
  • Comes with a complimentary pack of pods – so it is literally ready to use out of the box – 14 pods – including 3 decaffeinated. Great way of testing a range of flavours and strengths before you decide which is your choice of brew!
  • Milk frother integrated
  • Attractive design and colour – looks great out on display in the kitchen.
  • Superfast heat up means you don’t have to wait very long at all for your cuppa!
  • Single serve milk jug measures the perfect amount for a cappuccino so no waste.
  • Small and compact, takes up limited surface space, much better than having a separate milk frother.

Cons:

  • As with most coffee machines it can be a little noisy
  • The frother can spatter a little bit when it first starts, but this wasn’t a major issue
  • It wasn’t a problem for us, but I guess for coffee obsessives, the 1L water tank may be a little on the small side, and as such, may need topping up fairly regularly.
