AD – Jump It Lap Counter gifted for review

It’s been a strange few years. Now working from home full time and constantly juggling work and home life, my fitness levels certainly aren’t what they used to be. The girls have also spent far more time than usual stuck to their screens, whether that’s been home schooling, homework tasks or downloading games on the iPad.

In 2022, we’re making a real effort as a family to stay active and spend more time back in the great outdoors, just like we did during lockdown. With the seasons gradually changing and the storms finally settling, there really is no excuse not to get back out there and blow the cobwebs away.

In 2022, we’re going to be working with Character UK and their fab Stay Active range – a selection of inclusive toys that can be enjoyed by the whole family together both indoors and outdoors, encouraging movement and keeping everyone active whilst creating some friendly inter-family competition!

Not only can the Stay Active range help reduce screen time and time prevent a sedentary lifestyle, but keeping active can help improve overall mental wellbeing, balance, coordination and stamina, as well as social skills, self esteem and confidence. Being more active can also help everyone get a better night’s sleep and what’s not to love about that?!

Each month we will be testing some of the Character Options Stay Active products and putting them through their paces as a family. Last month we reviewed moon shoes and this month, we’ve been staying active with Jump It Lap Counter. This product brings back so much nostalgia from my own childhood that I was almost as excited as Erin to try it!

What is the Jump it Lap Counter?

The Jump It Lap Counter is a high energy, fast paced skipping and jumping game that can be played both indoors or outside. Even better, one size fits all, so parents can get involved too.

Simply place the loop around your left ankle, before spinning and jumping as it rotates around your body. This clever lap counter automatically counts up to 1000 laps as you move in a clockwise direction and can be returned to zero at any time by pressing the reset button.

Can you beat your kids in the ultimate parent / child jump off?

How many laps can you do in a minute?

Not only is Jump It loads of fun to play with, it’s physically exerting too, increasing your heart rate, building strength in your legs and core, as well as improving your overall coordination and stamina.

Does Jump It require any assembly?

Jump It does require some basic assembly before use, but it is very quick and easy to arrange. Simple unpack the counter and loop from the packaging, before using the tiny screwdriver (included in the pack) to attach the cable to the counter base.

It took literally less than 2 minutes to put together which was a real positive and comes with everything you need straight out the box.

What’s in the box?

The Jump It Lap Counter box contains:

  • The Lap Counter Ball
  • A foot ring and cord
  • A small screw driver
  • A small screw

Our Jump It Lap Counter Review

I have to be honest here, during the first 20 minutes or so that Erin and I tested the Jump It, I could not stop laughing. It took a bit of practice for her to get the knack of how to initially rotate the counter and being right handed, she found putting it on her left leg didn’t come naturally.

As a result, there was lots of wobbling, a few tangles and a few occasions where she managed to spin the whole Jump It off in a random direction, but very quickly it all slotted into place and she was off!

From spinning in circles on the spot to navigating her way around the local park, Erin absolutely loved counting up how many laps she had done in a minute, or having ‘jump off’s’ with me to see who could do the most. Erin is also quite competitive, so the lap counter really helped motivate her to push that little bit stronger, move a little faster and keep going when she may otherwise have stopped.

Erin was also quite impressed that I could use it first time – clearly the hours of practice I built up back in the 80s haven’t gone to waste!

Whilst the Jump It can get a little scuffed and marked through repeated use, it is also incredibly hard wearing. We used it on hard concrete and block surfaces and the counter kept working, despite it hitting the ground with some force.

One thing to point out is that the lap counter needs to be spun counter clockwise to count correctly. If you wear the loop on the wrong foot or upside down, this does affect the accuracy of the count.

Overall, not only did it really tire us both out, but we spent a really lovely afternoon together in the park – no TV, no screens, no lazy day spent at home, but fresh air, movement and exercise – and we both felt so much better for it!

The Jump It Lap Counter from Character UK is available now at with an RRP of just £12.99.
